Wicked metal on metal sound under my truck
I had a bad left front wheel bearing on my truck a few months ago. No noise in 2wd, but in 4x4 it hummed pretty loud. When I jacked it up the thing was wasted. I could move the tire up/down/side to side q lot. I was surprised it hadn't been making all sorts of noise or driving funny.
The bearing/hub cost me $160 from RockAuto and it took me just about 45 minutes to replace it...very easy. Just some random thought...

I had the same noise. it sounded like I was dragging a rake down the road. I had the solenoid on the firewall changed and it has been fine ever since. Ford has a TSB on this. It cost me $40 here in Canada, so it's probably about 50 cents in the States.LOL The new ones are sealed better so water doesnt get in
it could be, most aftermarket mufflers have the bearing deleted to free a little more flow up and just takes out one more variable that will break.
my lifted 04 just started making this exact noise! I made a hard right onto a side road and the noise started. I pulled off on another road and hopped out to investigate. Couldnt find anything so I started driving again. About a min later it started again. Stopped, put it in reverse and it went away. Pulled back onto the road and headed for home. About 5 miles down the road and 2 miles from home it started again... sounds extremely bad, like the drivetrain is about to fall out from under the truck. I pulled over and when i slowed down to almost a stop, i felt and heard a clunk, and it it went away. couldnt really tell where the noise was coming from.
