Wicked metal on metal sound under my truck

I can't figure it out. When I drive my truck and it goes into its OD and I give it a little gas (not enough to drop it in a higher gear) it makes this awful metal shaving sound. It sounds like its coming from my wheels but I can't make sense of whats doing it. I had my brakes checked out and they were fine. Anyone else have this problem? My truck is a 2004 if that helps. I'll try and get a video of the noise a little later today too.

Does the sound go away when you put it in 4x4?

I have no clue what the problem is. Maybe you ran over a Smart Car and its tangled in one of the rotors. Might want to check on that.

Transmission mount maybe?

if the noise is dependent upon which gear you are in (you state only in OD) then it would seem that it must be in the transmission... right?

I'd get it into a shop ASAP before it tears itself up.

Wheel bearing? Mine was making a weird noise like that from the wheel area and it was the wheel bearing which is built into the rotors on these trucks

Yeah I need to take it to a shop I guess. I think its the wheel bearings (like all 4 cause you can hear that sound all over.) It also does it in every gear. This weekend I towed a boat to a campsite and 60% of the way there it was making the noise. If you floor it the truck makes the noise too.

I occasionally hear a noise that sounds like a cross between dragging a tailpipe and a loose heat baffle. Shaving is a good description too. Another way to describe it is that it sounds a bit like a loose center cap.

It is intermittant and when I do hear it, I know it comes from the right front tire area. If/When I do hear it, it only happens while I'm driving, ceases when I stop, and after a point, it seems to level off, i.e. doesn't appear to get worse as I speed up. I suspected the wheel bearings, and after reading this, I'm going to get it to the shop. I've had it checked once before and they didn't find anything. Last time it happened, I was coming home from the store. I heard it all the way home, then it didn't do it when I backed into my driveway. I haven't heard it since.

Nolongerjeepin asked if it goes away if you put it in 4 wheel. He asked for a reason. I think he was probably thinking 4X4 accuators (I think that's what they're called). They're trying to put it in 4 Wheel and grinding things up in the process. They're vacuum operated I believe and when it loses vacuum, as in accelerating, it does it . Better get it fixed before you destroy your engagement system (that is if you have 4X, since we never got an answer)

I just recently replaced my actuators actually. I had no 4x4 for over a year and I did the IWE replacement like TN-F150. So its not that. I mean this sounds like your wheel is spinning and someone putting a piece of sheetmetal on it while its spinning thus making the noise.

Based on your description, it sounds like the muffler bearings are shot.

I've seen replacement muffler bearings at the parts store. They are on the same isle as the cans of liquid squelch.

It comes from the front of the truck. Could it be muffler bearings? Ive had the truck for almost 2 years now and its done this since I had it but it has just become worse and worse. I need to take it in I guess.
