Does anyone know if you can actually rent a winch some where that could just be bolted to a tree or something close to it?

Someone suggested this to me, but I haven't ever seen a rentable winch or know if that would be possible.

The last time I got stuck the tow truck came and just winched me out.

What would be rating of the winch need to be if it were possible (yeah, couldn't know less about them).

how deep are you?

if you are up to the axle, good luck, but if it is just slippery and not sanken, then using a hi-lift jack to either pick it up and place some 2x6's under them, and drive out on the planks, or use the hi-lift with some chains to winch you out...

if you are going to spend the money to rent the winch, the gas to go there, and back, it might be worth it to call AAA...

or sit out by the road with a sign that says, "need a tow, i'll pay you 50.00" i'd help you out...

Either a tow, or a tractor with a boom to lift and move the rear end.

It happened to my dad a while back with the '99 F150 2wd. Our neighbor came down with his NH and picked up the rear end out of the ruts and move it over and he was good to go.

Took like 20 seconds.

I am reading this in utter amazement... I guess it must be a regional thing. I have lived in Oregon, Arizona, and Texas... All three places it seems there is a pickup truck in every dirveway, and a 4x4 in every third one...

Without seeing exactly how badly stuck you are, it is hard to say how to get you unstuck...

Terrible idea. Might sound good until the chain goes through somebody's windshield.

if you put a spare tire or something in the middle it should be safer, but i agree id still be afraid, ive always stood behind doors even if im far away from the vehicle being pulled

put a shirt or a blanket in the middle of the chain/rope

the material absorbs the energy of the whiplash...chain/rope pretty much just falls to the ground without the whip-back

it doesnt sound like you are stuck too bad! Like someone else said, get someone to pull from the rear where it is dry, if you can find a big enough truck it doesnt have to be a 4x4, just get a full size truck (not an explorer). if you are in a backwoods city in WV go down to the local diner at breakfast time, i am sure you can offer someone $20 to come pull you out if it is not far. the good ole boy will probably tell you to put your money back in your pocket and lets go get your truck!!

If you are talking about a church in West Virginia, I would be willing to bet a dollar to a doughnut that someone who attends has a truck and would be more than happy to lend you a hand. Just ask around today.

Pics so we get an idea of just how badly you're stuck would help.

Also, are there any big trees nearby? They gotta be stout ones, like oak trees or such. And you'll have to buy a few things if you wanna try to get this thing out by yourself, which may end up costing as much or more than what it would take for a wrecker to get you out.

Yeah, I've been stuck a time or two in my two wheel drive as well. :o

Just ask around at church today if someone with a fullsize 4wd truck will help you out, if you were helping out at the church other members should be more than happy to give you a tow. Or if there are any farms around that area stop and ask one of them, most of them will have a 4wd truck, or even better a tractor, and will have you out in no time.

Tie a rope to your tire. Deflate your rear tire a little bit. Tie to other end of the rope to a tree.

Put your truck in reverse (if the tree is behind) or drive (if the tree is infront), give some gas and the rope will act like a winch.

Supose to work, but never tried it.

I've tried it on a stuck tractor and it worked great!

But here's the catch... you need a limited slip diff!
