you need to regear. i had mine with 3.73s for about 2 months, there are no pros to the situation.

you get 9 miles to the gallon, have horrbile power, and shorten the life of your tranny. whatever that other guy said dont listen to him. regear the truck.

And run 4.88's dont bother with 4.56's

How will it shorten the life of the tranny?

the tranny will be constantly shifting to get back into the power band.

Have you ever seen what Josiah does to his truck? He has 37s with 3.73s. His is a 2004 and I'm sure has lots of miles on it. As far as i know its still the stock tranny.

3.73s are fine as long as your turn overdrive off when climbing. I'm sure re-gearing is a big help around town, but for highway the 3.73s are perfectly fine (especially with the pricetag of regearing).

I will probably regear when I can afford it. This is because my truck climbs at elevation a lot, which is more stressful than flatland driving.

yes i have, i have seen what he has put his truck through. i wasn't sure if he had a 4.6 or 5.4, but i now see his sig says a 05 FX4, so he's got a decent tranny in there. you are right about turning the OD off, i cruise at 2000 rpm's with the OD off and that's with 3.55's and 35's. i too plan to regear someday, it was gonna be soon, but my career plans changed again. if you drive smart, you tranny will be just fine though IMO anyway, sometimes things just break because and has no effect on tire size.

4.6 and 5.4 motors have different trannys, the 4.6 trans are weaker.

4.6 motors were never an option in a FX4, only in the xl, stx, xlt
