I hate the 5.4L oil filter...

LOL. I changed the oil in the F-150 today, and since advance didn't have my k&n oil filter last time I was there I had a mobil filter on there with no nut on the end of the filter. So I fought with it and fought with it since the only filter wrench that I could get the first motorcraft filter off with is loaned out. Ended up not getting it off, and just adding oil again and leaving the filter on...which gets on my nerves cause I always want to change the filter every oil change. But I WILL have my wrench back next go around and will use K&N and only K&N oil filters from here on out since it makes this job doable.

Just had to vent alittle.....

First time i changed mine after buying my truck, the jackass who last did it must have used an air wrench for christ sakes... lol But ya they suck to get at with a filter wrench, the fan shroud is way too close.

I use motorcraft filter and remove it with one of those filter sockets. Only thing I hate is all the dang oil running down the skid plate and dripping through 15 places.

When you install a new filter are you using a filter wrench to tighten it? If so all you need to do is hand tighten it. No need to torque the SOB down.

run 'em up tight, then 1/2 a turn past that is all you need (by hand only, no tools/wrenches need)

and run a thin coating of oil on the rubber gasket before install

never seen a properly installed filter need anything more than hand strength to remove...and they'll never leak

No I never install them with a filter wrench.

What happened, when I bought the truck I ran it for 500 miles and decided to go ahead and change the oil to synthetic. So I started to change it, and found out that the filter was in a pain in the butt place and ford had air racheted the filter on. Basically I killed myself getting it off. So then I put on a mobil 1 filter, and when it came time to change it again I got a filter socket deal from wally world and did a change but this time I used the k&n oil filter(this change came at around 3700 miles).

So when it came time to change again I went to get a k&n oil filter but there wasn't any at advance so I got a mobil 1 again since I had the filter socket deal. I did the change and thought nothing of it(this change was at 7k). But between then and today I had loaned the filter socket to a buddy and it never even crossed my mind till I had already drained the oil and went to remove the filter with my rachet and realized it had a mobil 1 oil filter on it again!

So today I fought with it and fought with it and fought with it, and then gave up cause I had nothing to work with to get it off. It was never over tightened, just hard to get your hand in there with the fan shroud and oil filter guard and all that crap in the way. Having the lift helped where I could actually move alittle under the front of the truck but to no success. So I just changed the oil(10,400 miles), and cleaned the plastic around the motor including the inside of my s&b filter. Also cleaned up the clear lid alittle but the filter was in good shape.

Tomorrow I tackle the dreaded fuel filter! I got one of those a/c line tools from advance when I got oil the other day so we'll see if I can break one of the blue clips and have that crap to deal with.

weird...btw, I recommend you run the Motorcraft oil filters. They have a superior anti-drainback check valve compared to the other brands (majority of them)

this will prevent your motor from getting that horrible rattle on start-up due to insufficient lube

Had this problem when I bought my truck. I had to stab that dam filter with a screw driver to get it off, what a mess!

Mobil 1 and K&N oil filters both have anti-drain back valves. That's why I use them.

I had the same problem after I took my truck to the dealership to get the oil changed, the guy that put the filter on must have been 1/2 gorilla because I couldn't budge that damn filter even with a filter wrench. So I ended up taking the intake of and trying a pair of Big Azz channel locks, that just crumpled the filter. So I ended up stabbing the filter with a couple of screw drivers and finally got it off that way. And when I finally got it off it was a NAPA filter, the dealership wasn't even using Motorcraft filter, WTF?

I haven't taken my truck back to the dealer for a oil change since. Actually that was the first time that I took any of my vehicles anywhere to change the oil, so i guess a first and last. I will just keep changing my own at home.

I once had to climb up in the top of the motor with a long screw driver. Had no band wrenches or pliers big enough. Yea it sucked BAD. Had to beat it in then turn a tad, then repeated this 5 more times

before i bought this:

http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item....re&dir=catalog

i changed a filter and threw everything i had at it. by the time i was done i dont think the NTSB could have figured out what it was. i have used this filter wrench on this truck, my mustang, wifes yukon and let many borrow it. never let me or anyone else down. i think sears also sells it for alot less.
