The "Edge" doesn't accept custom tunes. The edge gained its 50 state legal status blah blah blah. Using custom tunes would hurt that image and take away that status. Also, makes them liable, in a way. Instead, you use a "gryphon". This comes from PHP and is made for custom tunes and what not. Its mostly a liability and name thing.

PHP can do an exchange. You send in the edge and some money, they send you a gryphon with canned tuned. Later, Bill will send you the custom tunes. Call them for pricing on this, but I do know its very fair.

Custom tunes are far superior. Like mSal said, your using them on a 30k truck, why not spend a little more to do it right ? With custom tunes, you can make all the mods you put on work right, and get all your bang from them. Such as exhuaust, new gears, or CAI.

my 2 cents anyways.

There was a short period after Bill openned his shop where he was selling custom tunes for the Edge. But, Edge realized they could lose their CARB license, so they worked out an arrangement with Bill. He no longer sells custom tunes for the Edge but can do an "exchange", for a Gryphon, and then sell the custom tunes. I was one of the few ended up with an Edge with Bill's tunes. I wonder if that makes it worth a lot of money?

I can testify that the his custom tunes are worth every penny. I was quite happy with the canned Level 3 for 30,000 miles. His 87 Performance tune is what I have run for the last 20,000 miles.

Thanks for all the info guys. Last night I ordered the Edge, and then later went back to try and cancel it but it had already passed midnight and was on the shipping list so I couldn't. There is also a 15% restocking fee, so I'm going to keep the edge for awhile and then contact php about doing the switch with the custom tunes.

Got all the info on the gyphon swap and its something to consider and may have that done before summer....definetly a good alternative for anyone who had purchased an edge but has modified other performance areas on there trucks.

The only questionable thing I've read about aftermarket cold air intakes is that they apparently have the tendency to run lean when combined with the Edge. I've also read that this is more apparent in the 04 and earlier 05 models.

I still have the stock intake. Other than a drop in Dryflow air filter, I plan on keeping it that way.

The Edge is very good. It's great for a stock truck. It's a generic tune, sort of one size fits all, so it tends to leave some power on the table and is not tuned for CAI, so your aftermarket intake can not do it's thing. Level two has strong torque on the low end as a tow tune should, but loses power on the upper end. Therefore, it's not real great on the highway, but good if all you do is drive around town. Level 3 has great power but requires premium fuel and for me, had poor downshift capabilities. I was very pleased with my Edge for 30,000, other than the downshifts.

The 87 Perf tune I got from PHP is as strong as Level 3, but on 87 instead of 93, and the downshifting is awesome. Plus if you have a CAI, it will be tuned to take full advantage of it. I have had the custom tune for about 20,000 miles and it has been great.

Do you know what it would cost to trade in my Edge for the 87 performance tune? This sounds exactly what I would be looking for. I mostly bought my Edge to stiffen up the tranny shifts, but wouldn't mind having a little extra power especially if it came from 87 gas.

Take a look at www.powerhungryperformance.com and call Corey or Bill. There is a conversion fee of maybe $50? Then you pay for the tune, which is maybe another $50. At least that was what it was back when I did mine. I figured by saving at least 30 cents a gallon over 25,000 miles a year, I would recover my cost pretty quickly. It would have been worth it to me if I recovered no cost, it's that much better.

Make NO mistake, a so called "custom" tune is still a **** BEST GUESS *** tune.

BEST GUESS regardless of someones experience. Sorry, but if I was going to dump that much money for a tuner on my 45K truck, I would have it tuned the right way, not the Best Guess method. Of course, no one is talking 50HP gains here, the gains will be SLIGHTLY more than what a OEM Edge gives you. Definitely NOT worth the price IMHO.

If you really believe the rhetoric, then do it RIGHT by getting a DYNO tune. The "custom" tune CANNOT factor in all the REAL WORLD variables which take place, such as ambient temp, vehicle load, wideband O2 readings at ALL RPM levels.... and these change on a constant basis.

If you're going to spend that much on a tuner, DO IT RIGHT with a REAL tune which factors in everything!

Went to their site and looks like it's still $100 for the exchange and custom tune. I might have to try this. Thanks.

I may just go that exact same route once the honeymoon with the Edge is over.

According to PHP's site, it's $30 for the upgrade, plus shipping, and then $50 for each custom tune.

The numbers I just saw were $35 for the exchange, $50 for the custom tune, $15 for shipping.

You are correct in what you say. That just exceeds my needs. I'm not trying for optimum performance. The "mail order custom" I have is quite adequate for my needs.
