Any experts out there about lowering a 4x4?
Hello to all:
I own a 06 F-150 FX4 S/C and i'm looking to lower it.
I know everyone wonders why i want this but it's for a good reason. One i live and work where the winters are harsh, so thats why the need for 4x4. The FX2 is what i really like, but you can't trust it in the winter here, even with extra weight in the back. And two i like the look of a lowered truck (not slammed though), and would like to get the rear in the air look gone.
My truck sits about 5 1/2" inches in the front (top of tire to wheel well) and a wopping 9 1/2" in the rear. I think maybe 1" to 2" in the front, and 3" to 4" in the rear would look great and still give me more clearance that most vehicles out there.
Most kits are for 4x2, but there are some for 4X4. Like GroundForce that has a 1"-3" kit and Belltech also. But i don't if that is enough to get the rear down. Is there anyone out there that has had this done to their truck, or know of any links with step by step pictures? It would be greatly appreciated.

All 04-08 4x4's have a 1.625" block in the rear from the factory. By removing that block and replacing your stock 4x4 u-bolts with the shorter 2wd u-bolts will get the rear down some, to where it is almost level with the front at stock height. http://www.trademotion.com/partlocator/index.cfm?action=getLocator&siteid=213668&chapter= DR2MA04&appSectionid=2788&groupid=2523&subgroupid= 4097&componentid=6382&make=10&model=F%2D150&year=2 007&catalogid=2 The front on 4x4's sits 1" higher than 2wd's because of where the spring perch is located on the shock body itself. Just by replacing the 4x4 shocks with 2wd ones will lower the front 1", and you can raise a 2wd by 1" by installing 4x4 shocks.
Just about all parts and kits to lower a 150 will work on both 2wd and 4x4.
For the rear there is lowering springs that will give 2 or 3", drop shackles for up to 2" and flip kits for up to 5". You can combine parts for a custom drop of your choice. For the front there is 2" and 3" drop springs, lowering shocks for +1" to -2" on 2wd and 0" to -3" on 4x4's (what I used) and the DJM L.C.A.'s for either 2.5" or 3.5". Parts in the front can be combined for more drop if you like. If you plan on more than 2" in the front, I suggest you also get an alignment kit so you get your camber back into spec. When I first put on my lowering shocks, I went for a 3" drop and my front wheels were tipped in too much for my liking.
Of course you could always just bag it, then you can have whatever amount you want.
If you want the same stance I have, this what I did.
Remove rear lift blocks and install 2wd u-bolts for a 1.5" drop
Install drop shackles for another 1.5" drop
Install drop shocks with 2 rings on for a 1" drop in the front
You could also just install 2wd front shocks and get the same result.

Then yes, you can install stock 4x4 shocks in the front or install the same Belltech shocks I have with all 3 rings in place.
Here is where I got them and the part#

I'm suprised there is no nay sayers in here yet, this subject usually opens a can of worms.
Theres also the Roush Suspension kit which is a 2/3 drop for 4x4s. I got it on my truck, the handling is amazing, the ride is smoother then stock, its high enough that its still practical if you need to do truck stuff, I really like it, but its not cheap.
