05 4x4 Question

Hey all. I have an '05 F150 SCab 4x4 and when I go to disengage the 4x4 it does not always disengage right away. Does it take time to disengage or should it be instantaneous? I have the shift on the fly and the manual says you can engage or disengage the 4x4 in drive going forward, I've always been told to be at a complete stop with transmission in neutral. I had 4x4 drive to get up a hill the other day that exits onto a road but I couldnt' get it out of four wheel drive so I jockied my way onto the road with out making a sharp turn and went down the road about an 1/8 mile and it finally kicked out. I had not used the 4x4 in about a year, was it crap built up in the vacum or is it something simple? Thanks.

sounds to me, like normal operation. Kinda depends how long.... any sounds ? a hard "clunk" ?

Sometimes 4x4 might "stick" a little. Seeing how little you use yours, thats what I would bet. You can shift "on the fly" but I still don't. I know the manual says its ok, but I would rather come to a complete stop, then click in 4x4. No need to use N unless your shifting down to 4low. 4low, you need to be at a complete stop, click into N and then you can shift the T-case. Next time, if it sticks, and your in a safe area to do so. Stop completely, put it in R and back up a short distance, then back in D and go forward a short distance. Usually that will do the trick for ya.

no harsh sounds just thought it was odd. I've had the truck 1-1/2 years and it's only the 3rd time I've used 4x4. Thanks for the reply and I'll remember that about backing up. Thanks again.
