Locking gas cap?

Walked outside yesterday morning to go to work and noticed my gas cap was hanging out beside my truck. As OCD as I am, I would never do that. Makes me think that someone must have tried to steal some gas from me. Judging from my gas meter, it had not changed any from the previous day.

We have had a gas shortage here in the South lately, so people are getting desparate I guess.

Anyone know the stock number or where I can buy a locking gas cap? I want to get one to keep it from happening again.

Thanks.

Your local dealer can get them, Motorcraft ones that'll seal up right.

Take into account though that it's about impossible to siphon fuel out through the filler neck nowadays. It takes a hose about the diameter of a drinking straw to fit down past the flapper valve and filter in the filler neck, and even then it has to punch through the filter's screen to make it in. If people really, really want your fuel, they'll usually just knock a hole in the bottom of the tank and drain it out from underneath.

I would advise against getting a locking gas cap simply because if people want your gas they are going to get it. I work in the commercial truck industry and my customers have them and people drill holes in the tank to get to the fuel. I would say as much as it sucks your better off having stolen gas than having stolen gas + damaged tank.

Just my opinion.

Additionally, it's not that difficult to break a locking gas cap with a pair of channel lock pliers.

Remember, locks are for keeping honest people honest.

Go get yourself a 5 gallon gas can and put a gallon of gas in it. Now fill the rest with water. Leave it in the bed of your truck as a gift for when they return. Problem solved.

That's an excellent idea! Although I would think a little bit of sugar would be better.

I had a friend who had his filler tube destroyed from some fuel thieves. He said it was not cheap to replace the filler tube. I'd rather have a locking cap and a small hole I can patch on the tank, then replace the filler tube.

The gas can thing isn't a bad idea.

It's usually not a small hole thieves punch in the tank, and you don't patch fuel tanks, you replace them. Unless you like the idea of your truck being a rolling fire hazard.

I have the FX4 plates under my 36 gallon tank Try punching a hole in that! The sides of the tank are a different story

I like having a locking gas gap because I've had my gas cap come off while driving. I got an error saying to tighten the gas gap as I was driving down the highway. I pulled over into the gas station and find that the gas cap was completely off.

I'd pull, drain, and weld a tank before I'd pay the stealer for a new one.

Ever heard of fab work?

Please, go outside and look at what your gas tank is made out of ...
