Question for those that tow heavy with F150?

My dad has just bought a 50 horse Kubota Tractor, that ways about 6000lbs. We currently have a 16 foot trailer, but are considering upgrading to a 20 foot trailer so he can haul both the tractor and the brush hog at the same time.

Here is the problem. He has a 2006 F150 Supercrew 5.5 bed,20 inch tires,3.73 gears, 5.4 motor, prodigy brake contoller, firestone ride rite air bag system. After talking to many about trailer options everyone is recommending him get a gooseneck trailer to pull this load instead of a hitch style. The gooseneck would weigh 4750 lbs. They were saying that the gooseneck would handle the load better, which may be true, but can it be paired up to my dad's truck.

I have done some searching in the forums, but only with limited success. Can anyone give any advice or has any background with gooseneck trailers. Please do not recommend to buy a new truck.

Thanks for your time,

jrbhc8

Max towing for a regular cab F-150 is 11,000 lbs.

Get another truck.

Ive seen a few guys with goosnecks in thier 5.5ft Screws....I didnt think it was possible either, but they said the only reason its not recommended is becasue you cant turn as tight and might smash in the back side of the cab with the hitch. They just have to be a little more careful when turning.

These are guys pulling cattle trailers, so they have some wieght behind them too...

what a bunch of *******s.. your truck CAN tow that much weight, just not long distances, safely. And for the post above.. i dont know what your stocker can pull, but i have a receipt from the county dump showing a 28,400 pound load that MY ford hauled 15 miles just yesterday. i have trailer brakes so it wasnt an issue. Pulled uphill strong and braked smoothly. stick to your facts from your owners manual and you will keep the folks at Ford happy. quit being such ****s all the time. its annoying.

The reason everyone is being a "****" is very simple. Say you have your truck loaded with 28400 lbs on a trailer and you get in a wreck and hurt someone. Do you think any attorney in the right mind would not advise their clients to sue your pants off for being over the manufacturers reccomended towing weight. Not to mention if you get pulled over you will have a thousand dollar fine for every ton you are over your gross combined weight rating. Nowhere in any DOT book will you see that it is "ok to tow almost triple the weight that the truck is designed to tow".

To the O.P. Determine what the GCWR is of your truck and if what your truck, you, your trailer and your load will weigh more than that, then you should get another truck, if not then you can legally tow it. AND, I wouldnt waste the time and money with a gooseneck for 6000 lbs, you can get a 20' conventional trailer with 5k lb axles that weighs about 3000 lbs putting your trailer weight at 9000lbs, which should be ok.

nice rims by the way.. i guess in ol' redneck MS we dont pay too much attention to ratings. My truck handled that weight like a champ.

You're an idiot. Just becuase you severly overloaded your truck with a load of GARBAGE doesnt mean I want to do it with my new $35,000 tractor. Not to mention every post that BJP made.

ok.. his tractor weighs 6K, the GOOSENECK is 4800.. how much do you think his 16 or 20 footer will weigh compared to the gooseneck? A 20 footer with the trailer AND the bushhog shouldnt weigh over 11k! So my question again.. do u not think the guy can haul an 11,000 pound load? maybe i should buy the TUNDRA! ha.

I CAN ride a honda z50 around, but its certainly alot more productive using a machine designed for that kind of weight
