ABS pulse ring?

Okay so my truck was towed to 4WP this morning. I just called to check on the status and they said abs pulse ring or the exciter ring had popped out. The guy that I talked to said he has never seen that happen but that I had to find a new one. Does anyone have any idea what is going on or what may have caused that?

If I were a betting man I'd say the tow over had something to do with it.

It's a good thing you aren't! It may have had something to do with it but when I was driving my truck back home to get it looked at my abs light went on about 10 miles outside San Antonio. Unless that was pure coincidence and I have another ABS problem I am hoping they are related. Anyone have a part number?

Edit: They used a flat bed to tow it.

And they shouldn't have been hammering it? I really don't know too much about that area. :o Can you explain.

Stealth, it's a good thing you didn't bet the farm!

Maybe there's a reason I don't have a farm.

That is strange. Most of the time when I've seen a ABS problem like that it was usually the sensor or wiring broken on top of the rear end. Easy fix if that's the problem, but without a code it's a shot in the dark. I've had to repair broken wires to the sensor many times due to the gravel roads the fleet drove on that totally damaged the wiring and at times just had to replace the sensor.

4wp said that the actual ring is falling out, I think they said it was $90 from the dealer...

I'm confused as to where this "ring" is falling out. LF,RF? Is it a 4x4. Or are they talking about the rear differential. Any noise on braking from the front? I've never heard of this so I'm interested because it just might happen to me some day. The manual doesn't break it down to where I can see the the exciter ring anywhere, just the sensors to where they attach. Sorry I couldn't be much help.

Yes it is the exciter ring. I wish I could tell you more about it. All I know is that it was coming out where it is pressed into and that it is in the differential. They told me that they could not install the gears until that was in place first if that makes any more sense? What exactly does that exciter ring do?

The exciter ring is there to send signals to the speed sensor located on top of the differential and can't be reused as far as I can tell.

Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS)

The anti-lock brake system consists of the following components:

hydraulic control unit (HCU)
anti-lock brake system (ABS) module
rear wheel speed sensor
rear wheel speed sensor ring
front wheel speed sensors
front wheel speed sensor rings
yellow ABS warning indicator
stoplamp switch
I have never replaced one so I'm in the dark on this one, hope all works out for you. Matter of fact I'm interested how they press the new one in place. Just out of curiosity, what rear end do have?

I have the 8.8 with 4.88's and ls. The guy at 4wp said they tap it in with a brass hammer... I have heard they can be reused... I am not sure honestly. The previous gear shop the truck was at never mentioned it, then again I don't really care for their practices.
