these transmissions are actually pretty good when it comes to reliabilty. It looks like you just got the "luck" of the draw.

see what the cost of a junkyard transmission is vs. rebuild or new

I'm out of warranty, how much will this cost?

that depends on if you can do the R&R yourself i jus had mine rebuilt at the begining of the year new TC for 1150 but if i had them do the R&R it would have been 2000 even

Thanks for the input everyone, I am now prepared for $2000, give or take $500.

I didn't think about a junkyard, that's a good idea, if I go that route it will be sold or traded immediately...

They actually drove it on the lift but it would not go in reverse. When I left it yesterday it was locked so this may be a good sign, time will tell...

I have never experienced a transmission failure before, no warning at all, it's an expensive lesson, thanks for the junkyard idea I should have thought about that. I guess that I thought I would have the truck for life, I guess not.

Transmission Failure

My trany fell out a couple of days ago and I have since researched a lot of the things mentioned in this thread.

My F-150 is a '92 with 200,000 on it. I have owned it for a year without incident.

New trany is $3,000 installed. Rebuild is $950 for the part, $550.00 for the labor ($1500 total). One year warranty. There are tranys offered here and there on the web from various salvage yards.

$1500 is just high enough to tempt me to rebuild it myself. I jumped on this forum hoping to find someone who could advise me as to how difficult a rebuild would be. I have all the tools I need, but no access to a lift. This would be a garage project. I have been encouraged by a family member. He says it is doable. What is your opinion?

Tks,
92_Ford

I would post this message in the "transmissions" section of the forum. Your truck is a '92, and this forum is for 2004+, i doubt you'll get much help here.

Man do I hate coming across threads like this. A guy posts about having one of the issues I fear the most, and then a couple of other guys quickly reply about having the same problem. Best of luck to you ryanbeal. With some luck maybe it won't be so bad

Mine went out at about 50k miles. No real warning started making some clunking noises for a day or two so i made an appointment for the shop. And when they tried to move it from the parking spot to the bay it wouldn't move. So I got a new FORD transmission put in for i think $3000 . Which came with a 3/36 warranty. That one lasted for about a week before it lost third gear. So that one was reaplaced under warranty. After about a week it started to shift really weird and stuff so it went back to the shop. The warrany company said they wanted to ford to look at it so it was taken down to the dealership. And i think they said some pump went out in the tranny so i've been waiting for that part to come in.

So i'll have to wait and see how long ths one lasts. At least it has a warranty. LOL.

It's going to cost $2000 and it will take a week to fix, that's all I know so far... :o
