100K Service and Spark Plugs

Just had my 100K service done on my 04 5.4. Happy to say that there were no issues. Spark plugs came out fine. I was worried after all of the people who have had problems, but luckily no problems for me.

Had the O2 sensors replaced also and went on a 600 mile round trip journey this past weekend and mileage picked up about 1.5 miles per gallon.

Hope everyone else has good results on their service.

David

Definitely good to hear the "good" stories for a change.
Hope mine works out as well.

Good for you Dave! Just curious, what gas do you run? I had no trouble at 65,000 and I am wondering if the detergent gasoline is a factor.

Gas

I always use Shell 93 or QuikTrip 93. Just depends on which station is closest at the time. I try to stay away from no-name stations and stations that don't do alot of business. Whether that helps or not....who knows.

One note: Right before I took it in to get the service done it was starting to get some misfires at low rpm under load. That started at just over 100k. (literally. like 101000 miles)

That is what I wanted to know. You are using a Top Tier gas. I run Shell/Texaco or Conoco and my plugs came out without much trouble. The dealer I went to follows the TSB and they have been successful getting them out. They told me that I could have gone to 100,000 with no problems. In addition, the plugs they took out looked new at the tip. I could tell no difference in performance or mileage after the plug change.

I don't doubt mine could have stayed in longer without any problems associated with removing them. There wasn't that much carbon build-up on them. Their usable service life had come to an end though.

I spoke to the dealership before I took mine in and made sure they were aware of the TSB. They think they may have been one of the first dealerships in the country to see the problem. (had a customer whose work truck was on the road all the time with employees putting tons of miles and cheap fuel in it.) They said that since the TSB had been out they haven't had any problems removing them. I did, however, conveniently leave a copy of the TSB sitting on the console for their convenience.

My dealer had done about 10 sets and had one plug break. That was on a truck that had 100,000 on it, but idled all day long. It was an oil field service truck, and they said they thought it had the equivilent of 120,000 on it. They were able to extract the broken plug with no problem.

I think a combination of detergent fuel and following the TSB gives a high probability for success.
