Anything with lift kits, 5.4l v8's with high mileage and no plug changes, salvages, wrecks, stolen vehicles... etc...

Other than that, they are pretty good.

Oh. Sorry.

The 04-08 New Body Style F150's offer:

Engines
4.2l V6 205hp and 260 ft/lbs
4.6l V8 248hp and 294 ft/lbs
5.4l V8 300hp and 365 ft/lbs

Transmissions
4.2l V6 - 5 speed manual or 4 speed automatic
4.6l and 5.4l V8 - 4 speed automatic

4x4 options
4x4 only available on the v8 models with ESOF or manual shifter

Available cab options with bed options
Regular cab short bed (flareside/styleside)
Regular cab long bed
Supercab short bed (flareside/styleside)
Supercab long bed (requires the HD package)
CrewCab 5.5 ft bed
CrewCab 6.5l ft bed

The available axle ratios
4.2l - 3.31 or 3.55 with or without limited slip 8.8" ring and pinion
4.6l - 3.55, or 3.73 with or without limited slip 8.8" ring and pinion
5.4l - 3.55, 3.73, or 4.10 with or without limited slip 9.75" ring and pinion

HD offers a stiffer suspension and heavy duty shocks increasing max payload to 3050 lbs only on long bed regular cab model 4x2 model.

I'd watch for rear axle noises, abnormal shifting of the auto trans, burnt clutch on manual trans, engine ticking and pinging, exhaust smoke, and possibly bad injectors on the 5.4l v8.

Other than that... they are pretty good.

Thats not entirely true...

the 4.6L did not get 248 hp, until '07

My '05 was still rated 231 from the factory,

Well... I went off my model year...

I didn't feel like doing an exhaustive research...

But yes, you are correct!

Most (not all) of the 2004's I've worked on had the 2-Valve 5.4L instead of the newer 3-Valve engine. The 3V engine has a bit more umph than the 2V and typically delivers a smidge better MPG. The spark plugs are known to break upon removal, but personally, I've never seen it myself.

The 2004 & 2005 models are notorious for dash, head liner and electric rear window rattles. The beds and tail gates are also prone to squeak and rattle. Compared to a Chevy or Dodge, they don't make any noise at all! Mechanically, the 2004+ trucks are very reliable. Transmissions and rear ends may clunk now and again, but so have every other older F-150 I've owned.

there is no 6 cyl engine for the new body style

http://www.trucktrend.com/oftheyear/...nsmission.html

this is the second post I've seen where somebody claims that a V6 is offered...nope, NOT...the new model is too heavy (or so I was told by a dealership) to warrant a V6...in fact I was told the gas mileage for the 4.6L and 5.4L V-8's is very similar because of this increased weight 'issue'...the reasoning being that the weight to horsepower ratio makes the 5.4 about equal to the 4.6 in economy, which is a difference that the heritage body style doesn't share...

They must have slipped a 4.2l v6 5 speed in my 2007 by accident.

I'd steer clear of that particular dealer.

so sounds like there hasn't been any recalls on the engines?
sounds like the 5.4 would be my best bet since the gas millage is pretty much the same, but if i find a good deal on the 4.6 it wouldn't be a bad choice
i wouldn't be using the truck for towing or hauling...maybe once in a blue moon i'll be pulling a boat or something
i'm looking for a crewcab short box 4x4 auto

yes, back on topic. the 5.4 is what everyone recommended I get when I asked the same question you asked. I went with the fx4 because it's got a centre console shifter with the 5.4/4x4 that I wanted.
Take a look at all the models and decide on which you prefer. There is basic work truck, off-road, luxury or a mix available.

Personally... it's really up to you.

The 5.4l will give you some performance... but don't expect it to beat much stock, let alone tuned a little bit. It's a 6,000 lb truck.

From my personal experiences, some I know will beg to differ, which is fine with me, but the 4.2l, 4.6l, and 5.4l will yield you about the same acceleration rates under "normal" acceleration. WOT is somewhat of a different story... but the way I look at it the 4.2l and the 4.6l are close ties when it comes to WOT acceleration. The 5.4l on the other hand will shave about a second or two off, in reality.

Gas mileage... all are about the same... except for the 4.2l with the 5 speed... not only myself, but others have been pulling of 20-23 mpg off of it; which of course is excellent.

It's really up to you.

The newer trucks really have no big recalls to really be concerned with.

The 04 NBS did not have the V6, only the Heritage OBS - I believe they put it back in 05.
