5.4 cam phasers

What does it sound like when they go??? Last night I was being cool by myself and F'd something up. I came off a stop sign turning right going up a hill. After I made the turn I laid into it and lit em up through 1st. It shifted second and I still had it pegged. When the wheels slowed down she decided to slam first again and my Edge records show max RPM of 5556. I was doing close to 50 the second time it shifted second. Now I have this "whirring" noise coming from the front of the engine. I am hoping it is something stupid like the tensioner pulley or possibly the alternator. It is too damn cold out to pinpoint the noise but It goes along with the RPM's, the faster I go the louder it is. I have heard of cam phasers going out can anybody describe that sound for me?

When the cam phasers go it makes a metallic double knock that only appears after the engine fully warms up. Sounds like you've got other problems.

And you only hear them knock at warm idle.

Check out www.flatratetech.com episode 22 under videos. You will see the videos tab on the main page. They go through in pretty good detail the kind of noises that are normal and not so normal relevant to cam phasers and I believe fuel injectors as well. I believe cam phaser degradation occurs over a period of time. Normally, it will start out as a knock. Might have to get a scope on it to isolate. Quintin here on the boards is a Ford Tech and would have a great deal of information surrounding phaser failure as he just replaced one of his recently. Do a search under his name and some of his posts should pop up. Good luck!

Alright, I've had some time too research the cam phaser issue and have ruled that out. So I am really hoping for an Idler pully making the noise mabey alternator. I've also looked in my Haynes manual and saw that we have this big crazy timing chain. I'm really hoping the chain did'nt jump a tooth. I am going to get it in a buddies shop and pull the fan shroud and try to use a stethascope to pinpoint the noise. Mabey the bearings in the alt are shot....I've been getting the high pitch whistle when it is really cold. My Edge also has some really crazy records for CHT and EOT, both are in the 8000+ range.

the high pitch whistle is nothing to worry about. my truck has the same problem and i think its just a weird spot the wind hits. as far as the whirring goes it sounds like a pully or some other problem. my grandpas truck (98 ram) made that same noise and it turned out to be the AC pully. or maybe theres just a piece of string or somthing hitting the fan?

Well yesterday it was a balmy 45 degrees here so I finally got to fix it. I went to Autozone and picked up an idler pulley and tried to get the tensioner pulley but the dumbass couldnt find it in his computer so he told me it didnt exist.....F'n moron!!!. Anyways, I replaced the idler pulley on the passenger side first and still had the noise. Next was the idler pulley on the driver side and it was'nt that one either. The third one I took off, I dont even know what that one was for. It is directly under the idler pulley on the driver side, it had ribs in it so I am guessing maybe the waterpump???? Finally I pulled the tensioner arm off and BINGO I found the culprit, the pulley comes of the arm so I took it off and brought it back to Autozone. When I got in there the guy insisted there was no tensioner pulley. I got him to let me on his puter and found it within 5 minutes. All in all it was a very easy fix, just had to use process of elimination. I would have liked to get a Gatorback belt to replace mine but Autozone doesnt have them so that will come another day. The stock one is still in good shape for having 67,000 on it. It is sooooo nice to drive a quiet truck again

I could get some if you want, nothing really to see though just a pulley. The bearing is almost but not quite shot. I'm going to keep it and the idler pulley in the truck just in case. You never know when that stuff is going to go.

So the bearing is almost gone, causing the noise. I'll keep that in mind for future wierd noises.

Thanks!
