Exclamation ABS light came on again...whats causing it to?

About 3 months ago pulling the boat home from the lake my abs light had came on....This was a month or so after i had done a powerbrake..Soon as i shut the truck off it went off....soon to come on later.

It hasnt been on in 3 months till pulling another trailer and getting the the brakes a lil to stop and now the light comes on. I can slam on the brakes and it doesnt act like any abs is kicking in. So im wondering whats causing this to come on. Trucks got about 50,000 miles with the original brakes.

Are you using a trailer brake controller? If so then it's possible that it's not compatible with the ABS system on the truck.

Hmm, I too have the ABS light but I'm near certain it's the ABS speed sensor on the rear differential, it has been submerged on numerous occasions and they're notorious for going out.

Yes but that has nothing to do with the abs system. Its been on the last 2 trucks and the trailer i was pulling both times didnt have electric brakes.

Josiah....What do you mean speed sensor? Cost alot to fix it? Im getting rid of the truck hopefully in six months but with winter coming up i would like to have abs. Id have em hook it up to the computer but i hate spending another 80 bucks a crack for that.

Interesting, I've seen cases where the controller for one reason or another wasn't compatible with the ABS, or the gain being set too high/low caused the ABS light to come on.

There's a toothed ring inside the rear diff with a speed sensor mounted on the outside that controls the rear ABS.

made some roadkill last year that caused this on mine. I'd bet cash it's a speed sensor. It won't affect your normal breaks but your abs will be shut off. I was 3 hours into a 10 day trip when it happened. went trail riding in Colorado and put over 2000 miles on the truck on that trip and had no ill effects.

When you first start the vehicle it won't register till after a while the computer will see that it's not getting the right signal. That's when it shuts it off and turns on the ABS light.

I'm not sure how expensive it is since mine was repaired under warranty. However it was fixed in under an hour so it might not be too expensive.

I have the same issue only I get premature ABS most times and then the light goes on. I have had both front speed sensors replaced and the rear diff sensor was replaced when I bought the truck and it still happens. I think I must have a short somewhere but can't figure out where. Good luck!!

Forgot to add, the front speed sensors cost me about $150 installed each (each replaced on different occassions).

Havnt done a burnout lately...well...3 weeks ago a lil one before i got new tires on. Nothing that i held the brake too long.

Driving with out a trailer it wont be on till i drive a few miles and then the light comes on. So just as someone has said. Is it something a guy can fix himself? I just hate paying the 90 bucks or whatever it is to hook the computer up just to tell you whats wrong with it. Freakin eh.

So more than likely the rear speed sensor?

Autozone can read a code for you so you don't have to pay for it, or if you have a tuner it will tell you.

You need a multi thousand dollar tool to pull ABS codes and numerous other types of codes, but it's an incredibly powerful tool. I had the honor to play with one, many on here work with them daily at work. Mine is certainly the rear speed sensor, I pulled it. It's just an electrical connector that slides into the rear diff.

No....tuners just check the engine codes.
