Maybe part of the e-brake?

I'm gonna follow this thread until we figure it out. This can't be coincidence.

Where's that slow talking guy with the tilty head from CSI Miami when you need him?

If you have a ball bearing 'in hand' check the functionality of your seatbelt.

"...Most seat belts are equipped with locking mechanisms (or inertia reels) that tighten the belt when pulled fast (e.g. by the quick force of a passenger's body during a crash) but do not tighten when pulled slowly. This is implemented with a centrifugal clutch, which engages as the reel spins quickly. Alternatively, this function may be secured by a weighted pendulum or ball bearing: when these are deflected by deceleration or roll-over they lock into pawls on the reel...."

I don't even know whether Ford uses 'a centrifugal clutch' or ball bearing.
As long as they catch when you ****** hard on it, no worries.

Raoul; No worries, thanks ror the assurance about the seat belts. Now if I could just find out where that ball bearing came from I wouldn't have to worry about that either. The mystery continues.

even with the ball bearing out the seat belt will still lock. i took the ballbearing out in the inlaws 98 explorer b/c it got jammed and so they wont get a ticket. just something to take a hard look at since it might not do it's job when you need it too.

So, the Ford belts do use a ballbearing.

I wished I'd stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night so I could figure this out.
