Regearing

I'm looking at regearing my truck finally and have a couple of questions before doing so. Specifics about my truck;

2WD
6" suspension lift
35x12.50 tires

1. Which gears should I go with 4.56 or 4.88's?
2. Will I have to get new tunes since I have the stock 3.55 gears?

Hawaii has lots of hills so I am really noticing my truck doing alot of gear searching which is leading to my decision to regear. That and I am trying to regain some of the low end power I lost with the lift and tires. I have noticed though that since installing my exhaust in July the truck doesn't have as much kick either in the low end so hoping regearing cures this.

Thanks

1. Are you ever going to go bigger tire wise? How much highway driving do you do?

2. Just change the gear size in your Xcal2. If you do go with 4.88s you'll have to get a new tune sent to you because it doesn't allow for 4.88s. Most tuners should do it for free though since they should of kept your tune on file. I know thats what VMP Tuning did for me.

I don't see myself lifting the truck any further or adding any larger tires in the future. I'd say since I moved to Hawaii my highway mileage has dropped significantly, probably about 20-30% and the rest is in town, stop-n-go driving.

So if I go with the 4.56's I can just change the settings in the Xcal 2 rather than going with the 4.88's and having new tunes sent? Even if I have to pay a little to get the tunes readjusted I'd rather get the best gears for the truck.

Went down to the local offroad shop here in Pearl City and paid for my 4.56 gears. They'll be getting installed in about 2 weeks . I also went ahead and got a stainless steel differential cover that they'll install when they do the gears. All total I paid $1193, probably a little more than I would have paid back in CONUS, but I expected Hawaii to be a little more expensive. Can't wait until they're installed and I get to feel the difference.

Sweet, sounds good to me. I'm sure you'll be happy.

Do you know what rear diff cover you got? If you can, I'd get the Mag-Hytec!

You will be happy with 4.56's... From the nice people on here to give me the advice, 4.88's are just WAY too big.

I hope everything goes well with the gear swap.

It wasn't that one. He pointed to one of the trucks in the parking lot with the cover and it was just a plain cover, no design. I may ask about the cover you have on your truck though and see what they say. The shop I went to in MS actually had that cover, but this shop didn't seem to carry it

So what's the most noticable thing about regearing your truck?
