Part II-Painted Mirrors-DIY

Here are my newly painted mirrors. They turned out alright, a few things could of went better, but for the most part I like them. Below is several pictures of the process. Don't have time to write a how-to, but if you have any questions I would be more than happy to answer them for you.

Also I ran out of 3M tape while taping off the mirrors, and had to use some normal masking tape we had around the house. When removing tape, it left a little residue from the tape on the mirrors. Does anyone have any could products to remove the residue without eating into my mirrors. You'll see the residue in the pics.

Thanks jrbhc8

For the tape residue try denatured alcohol, it should take it off and should not discollor the mirrors.

A few questions.

1.) Any reason why you only painted to thop piece?

2.) Did you apply a clear coat to them, they seem to have more of a matte finish?

I applied 3 coats of clear to each mirror. I noticed this too, they came out a little foggy loooking.

I only painted the top piece becuase I was afraid my tires would throw rocks and chip the mirror. I figured the top cap would be the safest to paint. I was also going for that Fx2 look.

You may not have waited long enough after the last coat of color to apply the clear. You can go back now and lightly wetsand them and spray some more clear and you should get the look you want.

Also not sure how the weather was when you painted the clear but if the humidity is high it will cloud the clear coat.

jr,

What type of white primer did you use?

I did the LT swap on my doors, but when they sprayed my bed liner, they sprayed over the bolts. Therefore, I couldn't remove the tail gate handle. When I installed the door handles, I took the tail gate off, sanded and sprayed the handle 4 coats, and cleared it 4 coats. It looked great, but recently the paint has started to chip where my tape line was.

I guess my mistake was not using an primer made for plastic? Anyone have any advice? I'm planning to repaint it if it continues to chip.

I think the low gloss was probably a combination of the humidity and the color coat. My mistake on not letting it dry complete, and there is always high humidity in Missouri. I think that if I get some free time this weekend, I will tape them off again, sand the clear, and try to get more of a wet finish.

I have no time this week, do you guys think this needs to be done ASAP, or it could wait until the weekend?

It can wait as long as you can. I highly doubt that it was the base coat not drying enough I have never seen a clear coat turn cloudy because the basecoat was still too wet. If the base coat was too wet when you started with the clear it would have just lifted the base coat a bit. 99% of the time it is just humidity getting to the clear causing it to be cloudy.

As for sanding it I would just wet sand it with some 2000 grit and put another coat or two of clear on it.

Did you spray the mirrors with a rattle spray can?
