Goodyear Silent Armor's
Goodyear Silent Armor's
I see that Goodyear has Silent Armors to fit our 18" wheels. Does anyone have them yet? I know I saw someone talking about theirs. I am looking for a tread pic. We have them on our 15" Chevy Colodaro's, and on a 15" rim, they tread is very car like. I wanted to see if the 18" looked more AT-ish..

Let me know what the tread looks like. Like I said, our 15"s look like a very very mild AT tire. The edge tread lugs are very close together. I think onthe larger diameters, the lugs are furthur apart, giving more of an AT look.
What load range did you get?

I agree, the stock AT's on our truck, the edge lugs were only half deep. When my truck had 25,000 miles on it, the tread had a good depth, but the edges were almost completely smooth all the way around..
Plus they seem to have gone down in price.
!!!! Oh, remember, Goodyear has a current 40 dollar rebate on them, until Aug 25th... !!!

An early review.
Had them put on last night. No problems. As far as tread, the pattern is very similar to the Wrangler AT/s, but seems to be deeper. I think this one will do better in snow that the AT/s. They are the reason I have a second set of tires for winter, BFG AT TAs. Will still use the BFGs though. Get more miles out of the tires that way.
Road noise is more than the Hankooks, which I expected, but dry road traction is far better. Also with the load range C tires, cornering is much more fun. Can get a good bit aggressive with these.
I did remove the TPMS sensors, they are easy to remove, the strap is not, so I left the straps on.
What I did was build a tube from 2" diameter high pressure PVC about 6" long (well pipe), capped one end, put a valve stem in another cap, put some paper towels in the bottom, put the sensors in, some more paper towels (to keep it from rattling), and put the second cap on. Waited for everything to cure properly, and pressurized it to about 30psi. It doesn't take much air, so if you do something like that don't use a regular air hose to pressurize.
So far no light.
Total cost was around $30 and that included the glue (heavy duty). Still have enough tubing to make about 5 or 6 more. Just need the caps and valve stems.

I got the Wrangler Silent armor in size 285/70/17. I got them from the tire rack for about 182.00 plus shipping. You will still be paying a little bit less from the tire rack than purchasing the tires from the Goodyear place, they sell them for about 230.00 each. As far as the ride is concerned I really like them. I expected a much harsher ride along with much more noise. However these tires are suprisingly quiet and the ride is smooth. I got the bilstein 5100 leveling shocks on the truck as well, the truck now rides a whole lot better than stock. It's a whole new truck.

Have a set in 285/70-17 for about a month now. They are definately beefier that stock the Hankook. Very quite on the road. I was very suprised. Much quieter than BFGs. Load range D makes the carcass a little stiff, but not bad at all. Tread looks like the picture a few replies back. I'll vote for them, but will see after a year or so.

I have the Goodyear Fortera Silent Armors in my 97 Grand Cherokee Orvis 5.2L 4WD and like them a lot.
I wanted a very well built tire for the occassional rock crawling, but also wanted the quietest and least rolling resistance possible. I got mine at Sam's Club.

My suggestion if you buy them is to make sure they don't come up out of balance by 2oz or more (before they add lead). If they do, tell them you want a new tire. Two of mine (that are now on the front) even though they are balanced produce the infamous steering wheel nibble at 66-68mph. I had one that was >3oz and I didn't have to argue about throwing that one back. Those two on the back produce no issues at all. Tires are louder than the BFG Long Trails that were on there but thats to be expected since the Long Trails are "tougher" looking street tires. Good mud/wet weather traction for the Goodyears..

I have had the Goodyear Silent Armor for two months now. Mine are E-rated, 18". They do produce a noticable harsher ride. And I have had to go back to the GOOD read BAD year dealer three times to get a good balance on these tires. I like the tires don't get me wrong. But Goodyear tire dealers suck!
Now my review of the tire.
Once balenced properly!, it rides smooth, and very quiet at all speeds. It is a good tire, however, I will never buy one again from a registered GoodYear tire dealer. They are MORONS!

I went with Made in Canada Firestone Destination AT's over the Goodyears for both price, appearnaces (aggressive looking tread yet very quiet) and past experiences with Goodyears. No complaints here.
For the original starter of this thread, check out the reviews under all terrain tires and read up on the Firestone AT's as well; especially for the money.

...and here are the reviews on quite a few AT tires offered on the market today:

Got rid of the Hancooks tires today and put on the Goodyear Silent Armor.
original size, 235/70/17,, nice tire,, no noise and seems to handle very well. Had the black wall to the outside. My Ford dealer beat Goodyear by $30 a tire. Got all 4 and force balanced for $794 installed. Alot better tread for Wisconsin winters.
