This is a GREAT post. My right seal was leaking and I've saved ourselves $500 by doing it on my own. I'm no mechanic, but by following the instructions and pictures, was able to finish it in about 5 hours.
Thanks again!!!!!

I have about 45k on mine and the left is leaking. The e-brake actuator cam arrangment had stuck on mine and caused the e-brakes to fail to release completely. I suspect the heat from the e-brake caused the seal failure. I think the e-brake problem is fairly common whether due to rusty cables or a rusty cam assembly.

Excellent write-up, Quintin.

It will be useful when I decide to replace mine.

Thanks, Mike

I hope I don't have to do this, but at least I know the information is here. That friction modifier smell is death.

I realize I'm responding late to this party, but great job Quintin! I'm getting ready to perform this task this weekend and decided to Google "F150 + replace rear bearing" and this post emerged. I was planning on purchasing a Chilton's or Haynes repair manual, but not needed now!

If anyone has a good how-to link on replacing the front bearings, please post it up.

Thanks again Quintin you rock!

If your truck is 04+ you will have to replace the whole rotor if you want to replace the bearings.

There is a 2 piece hub/rotor setup available for the 04-08 2wd F150 now.

This post saved my bacon this weekend. Thanks!

What started as a simple e-brake adjustment turned into a passenger-side axle seal replacement. I've never been inside the pumpkin before, but with the great pics and instructions here it was a piece of cake.

I only got 2-1/4 qts of oil (still a relatively clean amber color) out of my diff, so it's probably been leaking for a while. Could the low oil explain an intermittent ABS indication on the dash? It seems to come on under acceleration from a stop. Maybe two or three times a week it happens.

I really need to have a talk with the tire shop that replaced all my rubber THREE WEEKS AGO. Did they somehow miss that the right rear rim and brakes were coated in oil? I probably would have forked over the $300 or whatever to have them fix it, too. Morans.

for Quintin!

Can someone confirm that its possible for the Axle BEARINGS to be bad but NOT have an Axle Leak?? I have that roaring sound that was mentioned...but i don't have a leak---DirtySCREW

I don't see any reason why an axle bearing couldn't fail seperatly from an axle seal leak condition.

I have a roar in the rear end and grease all over the passenger side tire and brakes. I came in to look up what it might be and found this. Thanks, i am going to attack it next weekend.
