these engines no longer have plug wires, they have coil on plug ignition.

How many miles?

Do a search. Make sure you have the correct tools and some penetrating oil

Technically it is coil near plug. If it was coil on plug we wouldn't have these... (which are a nice upgrade over the stock 'springs' that connect the coil to the plug)

Or Coil over plug or COP for short. Not that anyone likes splitting hairs round here

You can get upgraded COP's, such as these, but I don't think they're worth it for an otherwise stock vehicle.

I am not sure if our trucks are using The Visteon ones. If Ford is using them on the F150, here is information I found on Visteon website. what they are saying is that their Coil On Plug is Designed for 10-yr/150,000 mile (240,000 km) durability.

Visteon's Coil-On-Plug Ignition System mounts directly to the spark plug, eliminating the need for high voltage spark plug wires. When combined with Visteon's patented "Energy-On-Demand" control strategy, the ignition system can match the energy delivered by the coil to the requirements of the engine. This unique system allows a lower energy coil to be used, and through fast multiple re-striking, delivers as much as 60-65mJ of total energy to the combustion process.

Features:

Matches energy delivered by the coil to the engine requirements using a low energy coil that charges and discharges rapidly.
Flexible packaging — custom housing, connector and boot configurations for specific engine applications.
High energy delivered only when required (i.e. lower engine speeds and loads).
Coil charges and recharges much more quickly than conventional ignition systems.
Reduced electrical system load over conventional ignition systems.
Directly mounted to the spark plug to provide a robust electrical connection to the plug.
Available in a "coil-near-plug" configuration with a short high voltage lead in lieu of an integrated spark plug connector.
Reduced spark plug erosion rate for improved life.
Integrated noise suppression available.
Benefits:

Improved Exhaust Gas Recirculation tolerance.
Improved fuel economy over conventional ignition systems.
Lower emissions over conventional ignition systems.
Reduced electrical system load.
Resistant to spark plug fouling.
Reduced weight and underhood complexity.
Designed for 10-yr/150,000 mile (240,000 km) durability.
Improved combustion stability at idle speeds.
Improved idle stability.
Laminations encapsulated in epoxy for environmental protection and increased safety.
