Chest type tool box
Chest type tool box
I'm going to go ahead and get a toolbox. I want a black diamond plate chest type tool box that sits in the bed. I want as big as I can get without sitting up on top of the bed. So, does anyone know what the dimensions of the biggest one that would fit and who makes these and where I can get one for the best price? One thing I noticed is that the gas filler pipe is in the way in front of the driver side fender of my styleside bed. I wanna make sure I can get one to fit fine and still have as much room as possible. TIA for any info.
Hey man I have the type of chest toolbox you described. I just picked it up from Tractor Supply for about $250. I don't know if it's the biggest one you can buy, but I can't imagine a much bigger one fitting back there.

I'm class of '04, what are you?

I'm not sure of the dimensions, but you can get a full size box to go back there. However, the gas filler pipe will be in the way. You can mount some treated 2X4s under the toolbox to raise it high enough to clear the filler pipe and level out the box.
I've done that on 2 trucks so far and it seems to work just fine. I put a bolt through the front of the bed to hold the toolbox in place. I used 3M tape to secure the 2X4s to the bottom of the tool box. The 04-07 F150s have a much deeper bed than the older trucks. So, you can raise it quite high and not be seen from the outside. On my Dad's 2000 F150 you can't see it from the outside and it has 2X4s under it as well.
Some toolboxes also have an angled cut at the bottom to accommodate the gas filler tube.
BTW, I like Better Built and UWS toolboxes. The locking mechanisms are really compact compared to some I've seen. Delta toolboxes have a locking mechanism that sticks out 2 or more inches inside the box, while Better Built and UWS are probably .75 to 1 inch.

Where did you get it? I'm looking for that exact type of box in black as well.

That's nuts. I got mine for $315, and that was including tax. I don't think mine is made specifically for the 04+ F150, but rather it is one of hundreds of sizes they make that fits the bed perfectly. We spent some time on the phone with UWS when we ordered to make sure it would fit. As you can see from the pictures the fit is spot on.
I went back and checked their website. It seems they have updated it a little bit since I got mine.

Here is the picture of the box in silver. If you scroll about 3/4 down this link you will see the measurements for the box. It's titled Chest Blue Label.

Edit: You'll have to choose 04-07 FULL SIZE SWB or LWB(it's under both) under the Ford drop down menu first.

The one I want is the black one (black label), but the bright aluminum one was $359.99 I think. Still too high I think.
