Supercrew & a Toolbox

Does anyone have a picture of a 2004 or 2005 Supercrew with a toolbox? I want to get one but with the 5.5 foot bed I dont think it will look right. I wish there was some room behind the seat for some tools but nope and the factory Subwoofer and jack take up the space under the rear seats.

I wanted a box I could remove and place in different locations in the bed as needed without limiting bed space. Here is what I went with.

Here's the one I just bought for my Dad's 2004 Chebby.

His requirements were that it would be high enough to slide stuff under it (lumber, plywood, ladder, etc.) and that it didn't block his view when looking out the back window. He was thrilled with it.

It's a wedge style box. I'm not sure of the exact model number, but I can dig it up you like.

There are 3 screws that hold it to the back of the bed, the part right behind the cab.

tardman91 I want to get the same box you have. Can you tell me the model number and where you got it from?

I was actually looking for one which has a door on each side but I love that low profile one in your truck.

Thanks

It is a UWS chest style box. The model number is TBC-55-WN. I don't know if you'll be able to find it in New York because it is a local Florida company, but they are expanding. They have a dealer locator on their website http://www.uwsta.com/ and the sales/service number is 1-800-432-4685. Good luck!

You can get that same style box at any place that sells truck boxes including Home Depot, Lowe's, Auto Zone, Advanced Auto Parts, Pep Boys, and every other auto parts store out there. The major differences between brands will be the thickness of the aluminum plate and the lock/ latch setup. Find one that doesn't have a cheesy lock. The Kobalt brand sold at Lowe's is actually pretty nice.

I got the black Dee Zee #83B "chest" toolbox (about 46" wide) from Tractor Supply Company for $230 before taxes. If you're interested in a chest style which sits between the rails, then you'll only find a few that'll fit the SCrew since the wheels are so close to the front bed wall. I found that many of the boxes were actually marketed for "small" trucks. Anyway, there are a lot more options if you're willing to go "over the rail" with a toolbox.

Mine is bolted to the bed of the truck. Toolboxes that sit on the bed generally come with four (4) or more self-tapping screws. I wanted the option of taking the toolbox out if and when, so I had a piece of angle iron cut, drilled holes where necessary, and mounted it to my bed just in front of the bed wall below the window. I then drilled holes into the back side of my toolbox and used stainless steel nuts, washers, bolts, etc. I have two wingnuts inside my toolbox so that I can remove the whole thing in about 30 seconds. The angle iron, of course, would still be mounted to my bed, but it's nothing too big to get in the way of lumber, a couch, etc.

As for closing it, mine has the one (keyed) latch. I can easily open/close the lid with one hand. I haven't had any issues. I do, of course, have to be standing in my bed in order to get to the latch.

If I had to do it all over again, I would consider a single lid low-profile. I was dead set on not having one over the rails, so the chest was my only option. But, being able to slide stuff under the (not too deep) toolbox would certainly be a benefit. And the low-profile doesn't stick up much over the rail ... you can still see out the back window. One more thing (extremely minor issue) ... leaves. I have a bunch of dead leaves that accumulate behind the box. I've only gotten the broom out twice to sweep them out, but if you live in a wet weather climate, I can see this being a mess for you.

One rarely seen (smaller) box is made by Tuffy (see front bed). It would certainly have been another consideration for me had I known it existed. But in retrospect, it would've been too expensive. jperea has it pictured here.

Another small box option is the Challenger from Cabela's.

I just picked up and installed a very large Poly-resin style over the rail box on my Screw. Walmart had them for $109 plus tax. This thing is massive, deep and thick. I mounted it on the rails with the use of 2" wide Velcro strips. With the weight of the box full all that is need was a little stickey to assist holding it in place when empty. It also came with a J-hook to mount to the truck with no drilling needed through the bed rails.
Uses up a lot of bed space, but it keeps my ranch/tractor tools very secure.

Trail Boss

The Trail Boss Low Pro is what I have with two CB antennas off of it and it looks great. It also has a tool tray and it closes and opens and locks very nicely
