Outlaw Intake installed - impressions..
Outlaw Intake installed - impressions..
So I finally got it installed. I was one of the first to receive it and I got the wrong tube, which Aaron quickly corrected...got it 3 days later. So I installed it this morning, went pretty smoothly. Installation instructions were good and straight forward. I had to play with the intake tube a bit to get it sitting like I wanted. I started it up, and let it run for 10 minutes (per the instructions) - no CEL.
Then I took for a drive around the block (per the instructions), no CEL. I am feeling pretty good. So after driving for about 10-15 minutes, I got on it a little more....the sound is great! I wasn't really pushing it, I want to make sure the computer has plenty of time to adjust to the new airflow.
Then I hopped on the highway, the sound was awesome while I was getting up to speed...not too noisy, no drone, just a nice tough growl. Then - my biggest test....I have had Airaid and Volant, both had that annoying drone/vibration when driving at highway speeds and then giving it just a little gas....sounded like the truck was going to fall apart. Not with the Outlaw!!
This is my first impression after about 20 minutes of driving. So far I am really happy!!!
No pics yet - I gotta lot work to do today..

Huh, I was expecting alot more feedback here. People have been dying for reviews/impressions, and this thread falls flat.
For anyone else reading...I continued driving, different conditions - highway, stop and go. And I am really happy with it. Sound is great, no vibe, no drone.
I did get a CEL at startup yesterday, used the Edge and saw "Engine too lean." I cleared it, and it hasnt come back. In the installation instructions, it will say that you might throw a CEL in the beginning (moreso on 04s) because of the large adjustments the computer is making. But it said once you reset it, it shouldnt come back. So far no more CELs. I will keep updating.
I also talked to Aaron about the tight fitment, and he said that he might consider adding an extra inch of length to the tube to help things line up a bit nicer.
Also, I feel like the plug for the MAF sensor is stretched pretty good. I am not saying that you have to tug on it to get it plugged in, there is just not much more play left in the wire.

Thanks for the update. I have mine but I'm waiting on the right tube to ship to me. I can't wait to install this and test it out myself. Is there anything I should be aware of when I start to take my stock system off and begin to install the Outlaw?

No, the installation is pretty straight forward. Outlaw included very good installation instructions. The only thing is it took me a couple times to get the intake tube lined up just right.
The hose barb is hitting the 90-degree tube, which keeps it from pushing in any further - I only needed about one more inch. So I had to wiggle everything else to get some more room to move. It might be a little hard to figure out what I mean, but you will see what I am talking about when you install it. I am still really happy with it. For $150 - can't go wrong.

Thanks for writing this review.... I have been interested in but holding off on ordering one of these for a couple of months. I was waiting for someones feedback and you addressed my main concern which is drone.
Just ordered one now for my 04 4.6L, hope I have the same good results.

If the engine runs lean again, it will throw another CEL. I have been in close contact with Aaron so I will let you know if I have another CEL and what Aaron says. According to him the 04s are more "sensitive" to the CEL than the 05+.
I'm glad you like it, and that it doesn't drone, but it made your computer put out a CEL.
You're crazy. That thing would have been off the truck so fast. I don't mind doing nice safe mods. 1 CEL is enough to classify as non-safe, especially with the close tolerances and need for a little more engineering you were talking about.
But, like every other product, somebody has to be the guinea pig so it can be refined and made a better product.
, the CAI is not making any changes to the computer. The computer was reset when you unplugged the battery. This means it must relearn it's basic operating parameters. In other words, it got struck stupid, kinda of like a temp amnesia. It has the no chit #'s programmed from Ford, but it takes about 1 day of driving for the computer to relearn and "set" normal parameters. During this "relearn" phase, it will hopefully recognize and utilize the better airflow from the CAI and make more power.
Your CEL indicates something was causing the truck to fall outside the hard factory parameters and this is something that is not normal. You should never get a CEL from a tried and tested product unless that product requires tuning in conjunction.
