I can almost guarantee you that with it being an '05, and with the mileage he has, it will be totalled. My sister has a 2006 F-150 S'cab 2wd XLT with 10,000 miles on it. The highest trade value she received from anyone was like $19k. These large trucks just aren't holding their values like they used to. Sorry to hear about your truck Justin. Hopefully, you get another very soon.

well, my truck is appraised at right around 25K with value added from my mods & 33,800 miles
trucks are worth a LOT more up here than in most areas of the country- my damage/repair bill needs to stay under 18,000 all said and done if they decide to keep it- right now its in that 16000 range, and they haven't started to really tear down the interior, engine bay- so if state farm factors in that there's 2k in damages still to be found, I'm kissing my baby goodbye- if they factor less than 2k in damages to be found, it should be rolling again in roughly a month (90 hrs labor estimated so far)

ouch...I am sorry to hear that...I was sure it would be $12k or so tops for the damage...

yeah, my truck is worth just shy of $30k up here as a trade-in...it will retail for $33-35k in my area right now...another 2-3 months and those prices will drop ~$3k

I'm not too sure about that. . anyone who'd pay that much would be smoking opium. I only paid $27,000 for my Lariat. .

your also in the South...for some reason 4x4 vehicles have a massive premium in the NorthWest. I've bought vehicles in Texas before and I used to agree with you. Until I got stationed up here. The cost of living is outrageous. My sticker when new was ~$43,000 (MSRP of ~$38,000)

I had a 2001 Screw with 196,000 miles on it. What sucked is that I only owed $1,500 more on it. Good news is that my insurance company gave me $11,000 for it. That's lot more than anybody would have paid me for it. So after paying off the old truck I had a nice down payment for the new truck. Went down to the local Ford Dealer and they had a 2006 FX4 Screw, NEW 95 miles on it. For a great price because they wanted it gone! Been on the lot for 6 months. So look at it this way bad things can turn into great things. Good luck with your outcome.
Same thing happened to me with almost the same numbers, only I bought a used truck to replace the wrecked one... my insurance premiums did not return to normal though for 2.5 years.

Crap, man, thats crazy. I live in PA, and my FX4 had an MSRP of $38k also, but I only paid $30k. Makes me glad I don't live on the West coast!

Thump,

There is a significant difference in buying a 4x4 truck in the north vs. the south.

I used to live in FL and just before I bought my 05 4x4 Lariat I was in FL visiting friends. The exact truck I have now could be bought then for $30,000.

I then came back to MN and the exact same truck was at a min of $37. It took a lot of work and a employee discount number to get my truck down to $33,000.

Granted this was back in May of 05, but what I'm getting at, is there is at least on average a $6,000 premium on 4x4 when you get significantly further north for obvious reasons.

I'm not doubting you at all so don't take it that way. Why would anyone buy a truck up North than? . . wouldn't people flock down here? I know I would if I lived up there. Prices are more expensive here than in GA though. I've got a good friend that buys all of his vehicles in GA and saves a lot of money.

I only get 2 weeks every 6 months to have free time. That's why I didn't go home to buy mine. I work on average 60-80 hours a week when inport, and 100+ hours per week when deployed. Not alot of time free.

So, for me it was convenience. I did pay more for it here, but if I sell it here, that premo carries over and I don't lose my butt. If I move down South, then yes, I'll lose my butt big time. I do know people who fly to Dallas and Houston to buy trucks, the drive 'em up here to sell. They make a good profit off of that.

I moved up here with a 93 Bronco and a 94 F-150. My 93 Bronco with 283,000 miles and a 4" lift with 33" tires sold for $6,000...they didn't even haggle. It was that good of a deal in this area. I just sold the F-150 for $5,000 with 97,000 miles and it was bone stock.

I bet they total it, when you're repairing that much stuff you can practically fart $2000. You don't want one that's been that beat up. Push them to total it and then buy it back and part it out like people have suggested. It sounds like a lot of people here are already interested in parts.

it's been proven that a 5.4 will fit inside the Mustang GT

I wish I had that kind of money, I think it would be fun inside my car

That's a very good point. Some people do actually.

But when it comes down to $3,000 - $6,000 there are several factors to paying the premium:

1. Flight to the south
2. Buying a vehicle sight unseen
3. Cost of your time (off work)
4. Convenience of not having to go far from home
5. Cost to ship or drive back up North
6. Buying out of state and then having to title in your home state. Some states require you to title a new vehicle in the state you buy it. Then re-title the vehicle in the state you transfer it to. (Based on the laws of the state you're bring it to.) This is why I bought my truck up here and not when I was visiting friends in FL. MN state law would have required me to pay taxes up here on the purchase too. Add those things up and suddenly it becomes the same price to buy here vs. buying there and getting it here.

There are some others but you get the idea. Sometimes the cheaper price doesn't always mean its the easiest or "total project" cheapest thing to do.

For some it's the cheapest and easiest and actually works out. For others the factors aline to suddenly make it a not so hot idea.
