looks like something really expensive to replace should the bed get hit in an accident.

I'm sorry, but from all of these pictures it does not look like something Ford would include on the truck.

All these pictures look like aftermarket bed equipment. It ain't hard these days to order some beds and then make them like this. Just like you can get those compartment side flat beds from a company like Reading Truck Bodies. Wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't a Reading bed.

That is mostly correct. It is actually a build/order option that the dealer can order. Offered by FoMoCo but final assembly of the midbox is done by 3rd party company SVEFLEET, a midbox/utility box company. Looks weird and is only available in white.
