After 96,000 miles on my 2005 FX4 (30gal)- every time the LOW FUEL comes on, I have 4-4.5 gal left in the tank. And I fill up very often, even though I average 17mpg on highway.

When the fuel light/chime comes on on my '04 %.4 Lariat Screw, I have around 4-5 gallons left. I usually drive it until it says I have 20-25 miles left to empty. When I fill up, I always put around 27 gallons in it. I usually get 475-500 miles out of a tank of fuel with the 30 gallon tank.

Most europeans also buy diesels, which are available in just about any make, model vehicle you can think of over there. Most get awsome gas milage! I rented a 3 series diesel BMW with a 6 speed manual and drove from Luxembourg to Munich (about 6 hrs, all Autobahn, avg 115mph) and used well under a half a tank...I was impressed! My Girlfriend bought a Mazda Miata, all her Euro friends thought she was crazy for buyin a gas car, In the states you'd be drivin cheap.

Fuel is SO expensive out there, regardless of what you drive, thats why i try not to complain when when i put $70 in to fill up, it could be way worse
Yep, the Germans love their small cars. They just look when they see the KR - and ask about the fuel. Smart Cars are extremley popular here - they get out of this world gas mileage. Diesels are popular as well. But thanks to the Army/Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) (at least for gas), we can buy gas coupons which can be used at certain off base gas stations. We buy the coupons in Liters and pay what AAFES charges per gallon. Right now we pay $3.14/gallon for the mid grade, which is equiv. to 87 octane in the States. Yep, it sucks....but what can you do?

I'm gonna get that Mini Cooper yet.....
