My 4.6 vs 5.3 Chevy!!

We went to the track Thursday Night for a fun night of Test-N-Tune! I pull into the staging lanes, and as luck would have it, I lined up next to a 05 Chevy Extended Cab 5.3 (Driver said it was stock..But dont we all say that!)

Anyways... we were small talking waiting for out turn, and he asked if I had ever raced her before... Told him No... K&N Replacement, and SISO 50Series Flow in stock was all I have done to it.

He started looking at the truck... asked if it was the 5.4, told him 4.6, 3.55 Open Rear End. He laughed... Said Well.... she wont run like the chevy will, so dont be upset at the end of the run...

I have the Screw, 4.6, 3.55..... He has a Extended Cab 5.3 Chevy... What a race... I only lost by about a fender! I was proud of my truck considering I had a more weight, and smaller motor. He couldnt understand it after it was over. Below are the times.

My Truck 4.6 Screw------------------ Chevy 5.3 X-Cab

RT- .011-------------------------------- .076
60'- 2.42 --------------------------------2.14
330- 6.997 -------------------------------6.206
1/8- 10.840 ------------------------------10.132
MPH- 63.90 -------------------------------60.15
1000' 14.161-------------------------------13.744
1/4- 16.956-------------------------------16.734
MPH- 80.61 -------------------------------75.96

Not upset about loosing cause I was running his A$$ down from half track on. He jumped off the start like a scalded *** ape... but wasnt crap down the track. Another 50' and I would have had him! or if he had been a little slower off the line I would have come around him! I Lost!!! but it was a fun race! I have the x-tra room of a screw, and the Box Frame, and a better looking truck... I'll take it over the Chevy anyday!

"It won't run like a chevy" LOL

I like seeing guys with Hemi trucks at the track.. I'll go and run about 3 times just to get the launch down pat.. but let off so it looks like my times are horrible.. Someone witha Hemi always sees it and thinks he'll put the Hemi hurt lock on me...

Always ends with them seeing taillights. LOL

I have the SC1714 Tuner... trouble was with gas prices lately I have been running the 87 Tune, and just firming the shifts..ect..ect While in the staging lanes I was getting it ready and re-tuning it, but like an idiot I forgot to put her on the 91 Perf. Tune... Usually on cool nights I run a 16.7 down to my best which was 16.2... Im not sure he let off at all, cause my speed is usually only 77-79mph. I have never hit 80mph through the trap in my truck! I was kicking myself after I realized I had run it on 87 and not the performance tune.

Never could get lined up with him again to run him on the perf. tune! Maybe Next time!

With an AutoMatic like our trucks.... How hard is it to launch... I usually just nail it when the light changes. I have not had any difference with holding the brake and reving up the motor slightly, in fact I think my actual ET is a few ticks slower when I rev it and release the break. Maybe Im not PowerBraking it with enough RPM to launch?? Just curious.. HIs was an Auto, and he jumped off the start fast... How can I improve my 60' time's? (as a driver)

Thinking about pully's, 4.10's and then some GOOD OL. TP Tunes! Should get me in the hig 15's? Wuldnt ya think? Maybe with "Real CAI?"and something other than the slowmaster!

What do you mean by getting the Launch Down Pat? How do you come off the line? Rev up the motor and release the brake?

Just curious, I usually just nail the gas.....

would not recommend the pullies. The gains are almost non existent, I got rid of mine and I believe I'm the 3rd to do this now. For $188 it's not worth it, even though it's a simple install w/proper tools.

I lower my tire pressure a bit.. pressure changes..

Depending on track conditions... if the track is hookin good, I'll just nail it. If the track prep sucks, I'll bring the RPMs up to around 1100 give or take 100 and nail it from there.. Depending on the track conditions.

Leaving the tailgate down helps 60' time by a hair, but it hurts ET's.. When you get up to speed, the wind slamming down on the bed of the truck creates alot of drag. You lose the "bubble" in the bed of the truck.

I'll bring tire PSI down to about 25 and let it rip.. just nail it.. get a feel for the track and coast through the trap... Lower the PSI a little, clean/warm up the tires next run and nail it again. If I can't hook well, I'll try bringing up the RPMs...

I get the best times just nailing it.. when the track is right.

The stock tires suck pretty bad.. I run a set of 295/45/18's.. pretty wide tires, but the compound is purtty hard (420 treadwear rating) so they aren't as good as drag radials or slicks.
My best 60' time to date was a 1.93 second.. closest Ive gotten to that was a 1.97, a 1.98 and pretty consistant 2.0-2.05

I know this is completely unscientific, but I just test drove an 07 Silverado Extended Cab 4x4 with the 5.3 today. Compared to my 97 F-150 SC 4x4 with the 4.6, it was a rocket and I didn't even get into it at all. I suppose it should be given the fact that it is 10 years newer and has more power, but I was actually quite surprised at the difference. It wasn't even close.

You got the 4.10's..... that's gotta be a Night/Day difference from the 3.55 or 3.73's from the factory. Soon as I can find a reputable place around town that's not a complete $$$$$$ rip off Im going to check into getting some installed. I notice your from KY.... Not familiar with the layout of the towns, but I'll be in Benton, KY visiting some friends, how far away is that from your neck of the woods. Any suggestion on the brand of 4.10's I can look into?

Nice Side Exit exhaust!

you have the 4.6, so you have an 8.8" rear..

Benton is about 15 mins due north of me.. I'm actually in Murray Kentucky.

If you're in the area, shoot me an e-mail we can prolly meet up. Talk some truck crap.

yeah the trap speed for the chevy seems very low considering his ET 60' and so on. im not trying to start anything but those chevy 5.3's are no BS. ive raced them since my s/c install and was very impressed how well they keep up... i spoke with a guy who told me hos rc sb 5.3 ran a 15 flat stock...

10.1 1/8 mile is pathetic. I agree, the guy let off or applied his brake before the 1/4 mile mark.

but, Ive drove my friends 04 silverado a few times, 5.3 liter with straight pipes and k&n intake and I was not impressed.

The chebbey's really have nothing to bring to the table.
