If you can't see a 3ton bigass red truck coming at you, you ain't gonna see it coming at you with lights on. I think that vehicles that need them should be the only ones to have them ie. emergency vehicles and motorcycles. The flashing lights draw our attention, but if everyone had DRL, we would become more oblivious to the flashing emergency light.

That said, I've found a recovery chain wrapped around the brushguard does a better job of getting someone attention than any lights will.

I'd like some way to turn the function off going south 'o the border, because every second redneck south of the 49th parallel, and especially south of the Mason-Dixon line, flashes/cusses/fingers me as a reminder that ' Ya left yer stoopid headlights on ya stoopid D/F Kanuckian furriner'! As they scream by with sewer pipe intakes, no cats, 4 dissimilar tires, no mufflers and the dog is drivin' .

Stealth - that was unexpectedly dumb, as you would never know (it's called situation avoidance for a reason) - you also wouldn't see a post sayin' "I got Kilt 'cuz I/they didn't have no DRL!" LOL!

Must be real cool to be dead ! LOL!

for DRL'S.

Over 21 yrs on the Fire Dept and people still disregard our lights and sirens,
I don't think drl's have any effect. I believe that I read years ago the reason Ford didn't require them because studies havent proven their effectivness.

Yea - I have flashed my lights at drivers that were about to pull out in front of me.
I think DRLs would have helped.

I traded a 2003 Sierra for my F-150 and I liked the safety factor of the DRLs. I'd only want them on my Ford if they used a separate aux. bulb (like GMs do). I agree with deapee. It's too dark by the time my autolamps turn on. On another note, my wife has an Explorer and her autolamps will turn on whenever the windshield wipers are activated (not the "one swipe" function, only when you'd be using them when it's steadily raining) which would be nice on my truck as well. I guess you don't get much for 40 grand anymore. LOL.

Being a resident of Canada and being forced to endure DRL's for the last 10 years of driving, I'm going NAY.

I say nay for a few reasons. One, DRL's promote laziness. We all know we are creatures of habit and laziness. DRL's give people a false sense of security. I have noticed a huge trend in people not turning their headlights on at night, simply because they rely on DRL's to make them "safe". I drive an armoured truck for a living and have almost had a couple accidents at night, simply because a person didn't turn on their headlights (and their tail lights at the same time). DRL's do NOT turn on your tail lights, and very few people acknowledge that fact.

I am voting Nay, not because of cool factor or headlight life span, but for the simple fact that people who don't have to think about their headlights, don't! If you need DRL's to save your life or turn your headlights on for you, you're too stupid to rely on them. The simple way to get DRL's is to just turn your headlights on and not rely on a system that isn't proven to save lives.

I followed the tech article here and ripped them out of the truck within a week of buying it.

As a side thought, has anyone thought of doing a census to find out how many lives have been lost to people relying on DRL's and not turning their headlights on at night? Forget the daytime (so called) benefits of using DRL's.

Yes
I don't care about looking cool, or any of the other B.S. reasons posted.

All I care about is the safety of me & mine. Even if the DRL's only provide 1% more margin of safety, I am all for them. I know from personnel experience they are effective.

Mtylerb was the only post that offers a concise reasoning...and I can agree to some extent.

I had intended to do this on my F-150, but never did. My 2008 Expy has the DRL option installed already.

I like them for several reasons
1. In low light situations (rain, cloudy outside), the DRL's are already on
2. Intermittent Lights...like a tunnel or under a underpass. The Autolamps aren't sensitive enough to cut on instantly. They take about 30 seconds before activation

Yes I am lazy. I leave my Headlights on the "AUTO" spot with the Fogs on as well. The DRL's are very visible. I can usually see them reflecting off the car in front of me during broad daylight.
I especially like the DRL's during the quick & intermittent low light situations. Where I live, there are lots of overpasses, tunnels, and general shady areas. The DRL's ensure my BLACK vehicle is clearly illuminated...and if the low light lasts long enough, all my other lights automatically come one...eventually

like I said. It's all about the safety. I ain't cruising for chicks, or to be top dawg for some people I don't know...and to be honest, any chick who bases her decision on the "Cool Factor" is one I'd pass on anyways.

Negative all the way. It just seem like a waste and is silly. My first truck had them (GMC Sonoma) and I thought it looked silly. To put less power to the highbeams may not really shorten their life too much but it just doesn't seem necessary. Plus, who wants one more idiot light unnecessarily lit up on their dash. Their only advantage to me is to pick out what the make and model the vehicle is on road trips and trying to bet passengers and make gas money.

I also totally agree with this, too often I find myself trying to signal people to turn their lights on while they drive around with dimly lit highbeams. If I get their attention they usually end up thinking I want to race or flicking me off, lol. People... I usually just disengaged mine by pressing the parking brake almost 1 click as it would make the lights go off but not cause the brakes to go on.

IMO the only reason to have them is if you live in Canada, but why would you live there anyways, lol.

Funny story. I was in my Armoured Truck, gun and uniform, driving along a road, following an SUV with no tail lights. We got to a stop light, so I jumped out, knocked on his passenger window and when he rolled it down, asked: "Can you please turn on your headlights, you have no tail lights and nobody can see your black vehicle, in the middle of the night, unless you turn them on manually." He responds with, "Really? Sorry!" and flips them on.

Point is, people have no clue that their tail lights are not automatically triggered or that their DRL's are their High Beams. When I'm driving the Armoured Truck, driving 110 kph down the highway, I cannot see that vehicle in front of me until I'm practically on top of them. If they're doing any more 20 kph under the speed limit, they're going to have a ... very bad night.

Ouch. It's not the worst, I just wish the Gun Control lobby wasn't so effective here.
