I have 500 miles on my 07 Supercab FX4...

Lately, I've noticed that when I'm going at a slow speed (parking lot speed), making a turn either right or left, when I hit a bump, there's a slight knock or clunk feel to the steering...I don't hear a sound, but these things are so sound-proof I'm not sure I'd hear a noise anyway. It's not 100% of the time, but it's frequent enough that I've been taking those bumpy turns a bit more gingerly.

Do you think I could have a bad ball joint, tie-rod, or wheel bearing at such a low mileage? Is this a common problem...or is this just something that all the newer F150's have and not something that is broken at all? I mean it doesn't feel dangerous or anything, just like something may be shifting a little bit...hard to describe. I'm used to driving a Ranger where everything felt really tight in the front end even when you hit a bump.

I might just take it up to the dealership to let them have a look at it and make sure nothing is bad...but figured I'd get opinions here first. Maybe someone else who went from a Ranger to an F150 noticed the same thing and it's just how these trucks are.

I know exactly what your talking about...my truck did that for about the first 1500 miles, I was about to take it in to get it looked at, and it just stopped making the clunking sound and hasn't made it since. If you take it in let us know, Im curious to see what they will say.

 

Not to derail but maybe we can both have our answers in just one thread. I have a transmission CLANK not clunk in 2wd, just taking off everytime. If I downshift it clanks into gear, every God dern time. Sounds expensive, could my tranny be going out? It's on takeoffs and downshifts only.

 

Yours sounds like it could just be something loose...like a tranny mount...I'd say a u-bolt, but then it would do it on take-off.

 

Awesome, do you know the torque requirements for the bolts around the tranny? I swapped my transfercase recently (about 2 months ago) so maybe that has something to do with it. I'm going to check the bolts around the case as well. No leaking however, I'd imagine a loose tranny mount would cause leaking.

 

No idea...I'd say as tight as you can make them lol.

 

I've got this same condition on my 05 with 40k miles. It only does it when pulling into a parking lot with a slight grade where one tire hits the grade before the other. Never does while driving down the road or over potholed roads. I love my F150 but I've been tracking down and curing previous owner neglect. Let me know what you find.

 

yeah...that sounds like mine would do it in that situation too.

I might take it in but I haven't decided for sure yet. Well, with Easter, I should have an extra day off next week, so maybe I'll just swing by the dealership and have them shake down the front end real quick.

 

Keep me posted. My only guess is a swaybar bushing.

 

My truck does the exact same thing. It's an 05 with about 27k miles I noticed it not too long after I bought it, but I just didn't really think too much about it. It only happens when I cut the wheels hard (right or left) to pull into a parking spot, or at least thats the only times I have noticed it. I curious to what you find out. I would have posted it a while back, but I could never really figure out the words to describe it correctly. Good luck

 

My 05 4x4 had a simular clunk. It would make a cluck or pop when I turned right. I put it in four wheel drive then back to two wheel drive and it stopped. I think a hub was sticking. Probable not the problem you are having but it is worth checking.

 

I'm not entirely sure your 05 or my 07 have hubs. Aren't the setups on these about the same as a Ranger -- live front axle, that is always spinning...the only disconnect is in the transfer case. For example, when you drive, your front driveshaft should be spinning even when in 2wd.

 

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but I have recently noriced the same kind of "clunk". Seems to be similar to what you are describing... Ever find anything out?

 

Well darn I have problems with my transmission too.. and my engine is making a knocking sound.. I took it in today but they were too busy to look at it. They said if I bring it in on monday that they will take care of it.. Hopefully its still all under warranty.

 

I haven't found out what it was on mine. I'm still saying its the sway bar bushings.
