Anybody have mushy brakes/bad master cylinder?

The brakes on my truck suck. Everytime I hit the brakes the pedal goes down way more than normal and they feel really mushy. However if I pump it one time the pedal comes right back to the top and the brakes feel great. So now everytime I start to brake I pump them one time to get them to feel right.

Its still under warrenty so I took it in to the dealer and they said it was normal. Even after arguing with them that my truck had had classic symptoms of a bad master cylinder, they insist that its normal.

My question is,has anyone else had this problem or had a master cylinder replaced?

Andy

I had/have the same problem, took to the dealer several times. They finally replaced the entire master cylinder/brake booster assembly. Even with the new parts brakes still mushy at times and brake pedal goes to the floor with ease, its scary at times.

So you think this is a vacume line problem? That would be great if it is that simple. Please let us know.

Thanks
Andy

My brakes feel the same way. Soft pedal with lots of travel before you actually start feeling it grab. I thought it was normal for these trucks until seeing this post. Anymore input from other member would be appreciated.

I remember a post a while back about this and the fix was something like letting your truck set overnight with the brake fluid cap off. Don't ask me why it worked, but i think it fixed it for him.....

I believe that there's an updated vac. fitting/line assy for the intake to take care of this.

That guy is full of crap! You dont lose brake fluid unless there is a leak.

You don't really lose fluid (unless you have a leak), but the fluid level will go down in the reservoir as your pads wear.

If you keep adding to your fluid, when the pads are changed the reservoir will probably overflow.

My truck doesn't have, and never has had the mushy pedal feeling you guys are talking about, so I'd say your dealers feeding you a line of bull. Keep on them to fix it as it's a safety issue.

Two different dealers have told me the same thing, that the brakes are working fine. It is scary when it happens though.

The brakes on my 06' have felt very soft and mushy from day one. I was told by a guy that the newer fords are designed that way for some reaon. They have a softer pedal to decrease touchiness. I hate the way they feel, and I guess that I will try to cap off the resovoir over night. Everyone that drives my truck comments on the brakes and how soft and weak they feel. The truck will stop on a dime if you need it to, just the pedal is very soft and seems to fade on every stop.

Please post the fix to this if anyone finds it, my '05 does it. But the wierd thing is it only does it sometimes, maybe 60-70% of the time that I drive, the other 30-40% of the time they feel great But when it does it I can pump the pedal once and they will tighten up and feel fine. I dont think this is normal, because my wifes '06 doesnt do this, her brake pedal is firm at all times, never mushy. I played it off in my truck to the fact that I have towed my bass boat many miles and figured it had just caused excessive wear in my brakes even though I do have trailer brakes on the boat, but after reading this post it makes me think there is a fix. I hope its nothing expensive, because my warranty has been gone for about 12k miles
