Duke, it's the smaller end on the tool pictured that you use. I hope that helps.

well i just did mine today at 29k (ford did it the first time at 15k) wow that was easy! for what its worth, you need the 5/16" size - i picked up the fuel filter tool at O'reilly auto parts its a little red metallic tool thing-mines only single sided and meant for 1990+ fords. put it around the metal filter tube and push in- the blue clip pops up, ant the fuel line slides right off! the hardest part was getting the filter out of its clamp/carriage thing- then just popped the little metal clip that holds the "J" pipe thing in and done- 5mins! woohoo-
awesome- thanks TX...

Did mine today, i didn't have to deal with the little blue clip like stated on page one. I dont think the job could of been done unless i had the tool

old filter, lots of rust...

didn't get a pic of the new filter in but it went well

OK, so I've got more time to mess with this. I'm having problems with the front part of the filter with the special tool.

I'm using the small side of the tool, and I have the clamp thing off.

I put the tool around the metal pipe of the fuel filter and push in.

Problem is, it won't come loose from the hose.

I'm pushing the tool in and pulling in the opposite direction on the fuel filter.

I feel like a really big idiot right now and can't believe I'm having this much trouble.

Any hints?

Got it off. It was just big time stuck.

Road salt wasn't helping the situation.

The one in the package is too big, even on the smallest hole, you need one that says fuel lines, not fuel cupplers... or something to that effect, its same design, just with smaller cups

This is a very good thread, and the pics showing how the tool works were awesome. Just changed my filter this morning after reading all the posts here. Only hitch was trying to get the filter out of the frame "holder" without spilling alot of gas (I ended up spilling alot anyway). Start to finish, it took less than 10 minutes (with the proper tool).

The dealer wanted $58 + tax and 1 hour to do it. Thanks everyone for the great discussions here!

I changed mine yesterday afternoon, and I think I broke the blue clip. I cut my finger trying to get the back side hose loose and spilled gas all over me, but to save the $60+ was worth it. I hope I didn't screw anything up. Seems to be ok today...

Well I was told it would be $41 just for labor. So I figure they would make a little off the filter itself as well. But maybe only $30 at your local stealership.

EDIT: I just looked up a local FORD dealership here and they charge $69.95 for fuel filter replacement. I paid less $9.95 for my filter, so by my math i saved >$60. FYI
