I was just thinking...I have the cleanest, and least rusty truck in this thread. It's also a surprise that some '04 guys have the same setup as mine (orange clip on the filter), but even some '06 guys have to deal with the blue clip. Maybe it's a reg/Supercab/SCrew thing? Maybe we should start a poll?

Exclamation Dont buy this one

For those of you that plan to change out your fuel filter yourself do not buy this tool for the fuel filter, it is too big buy the smaller tool...you need the 5/16" size.

EDIT: I just looked up a local FORD dealership here and they charge $69.95 for fuel filter replacement. I paid less $9.95 for my filter, so by my math i saved >$60. FYI

This is weird. I SWEAR I just got my Oil changed and a fuel filter installed (At the Dealership) for less than 80 bucks. The oil change is usually 30 bucks, leaving 40 for the fuel filter which I'm sure was around 10 bucks.

I guess it depends on where you're getting it done I guess....

I'm sorry because I didn't want to start a pissing match, I am just relaying the information that I got. But yes I agree that dealerships charge different prices. It seems like every one I go to has different prices for the same thing. I guess they charge as much as their specific market will allow. I am willing to pay more for great service, but in this situation I didn't see any extra service coming my way. I'm still happy I did it myself despite the cut finger. Now I know how to change it. This one was different than my last truck.

Yep, dealers can be pretty inconsistent with their charges. Mine charges $28.50 for an oil and filter change for which I always have a coupon for $19.95. They rotate the tires for $9.95 and they dropped the tranny pan, changed filter and added new fluid for $87.00. They want $69.95 to change the fuel filter. They won't be doing that, I have have changed it twice and am about due another one at every 15,000 miles.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for doing it yourself. Mine was grossly over due so I just had them do it and was pleasantly surprised it was less than 80 Bucks. Plus I'm too lazy to crawl around in the snowy driveway. :o

Did mine a few weeks ago. I used an alum anodized cigar cutter-looking tool. Came off pretty easy and didn't look too bad on the inside, also the fuel looked clean on both ends.

I bent the nipples while trying to cut it open.

you would think...

you would think that Ford would set standard prices that all dealerships would have to abide by.

where are you going to get the too and how much do they cost?
Also, are you getting your filters at the dealership?

The tools are ~$7-8 at any of the major auto parts store. Around here O'reilly's and Advanced Auto Parts carry the Motorcraft filters. AAP ~$9 and OR ~$13 here.

Now as far as the blue clip goes, I searched on here and found no real answer as to how it worked, so I decided to take my time and mess around with it and get it off without breaking it.. First step is if you have a set of picks, use the 90 degree pick, and slide it in between the fuel filter, and fuel line as shown here.

Once you have it in between the fuel filter and fuel line slowly pull back on the pick, and the center part of the blue clip should start to pop out, once it has poped out some, remove the pick from the fuel filter and place it under the middle piece of the blue clip (piece is shown in the next pic) and pull up on it.

Once the middle blue pice of the blue clip looks like the picture above, you will have to push down on the two outer pieces of the blue clip, this should release the filter, and it should slide right out. If it does not release push the center piece of the blue clip back in a little, and that should get it to release.

Anyway I replaced mine at 23,000 miles, and I will say it was filthy. I will update this thread with a picture of the inside of my fuel filter as soon as I get a chance to cut it open..
Well, I ALMOST replaced it w/o incident. I got the blue clip up, and, for whatever reason, broke. The rest was cake. I've got a zip tie in there now until I can procure a clip. But, yeah, the stuff that came out was dirty, to be sure.
