I think the description people have posted about doing the 04/05 filters is different from my '06. No one has referenced the little tab holding the filter in the bracket (that I have read). I couldn't bend it with my fingers, it's pretty strong and must be that way for some reason. I also had two blue clips, one at the filter and one aboout 1' upstream back toward the tank (not that it matters I guess). Anyway, I'll give it another shot next weekend.

Yeah, just bend the tab out of the way...and leave it there...I couldn't see any need to put it back. I think I had heard of the tab before, but the 04-05 guys have the blue clip fitting directly on the fuel filter. I had the blue clip fitting on a 6" hose forward of it with an orange clip fitting directly on the back end of the fitting.

Here's a pic of my '06 non-flexfuel filter setup. This is after the change I did over a week ago. You can clearly see in the blurry photo that the blue clip is not on the filter but on a ~6" tube. You can't see it in the pic, but there is an orange clip directly onto the filter. I used the chromed scissor type tool pictured earlier in this thread for both ends of the filter, and didn't need to fool with the blue clip.

Lucky man. I guess Ford didn't like the idea of techs possibly breaking the blue clip and decided to make a smarter setup.

I have blue clips on both ends of the 6" tube. Which is another reason I skipped it last weekend. There's just not enough room for me to maneuver under there, with a catch pan on the ground right under the line, without pulling up onto a curb or using jack stands.

More than I care to pollute my ground water with.

For instance: 1cc of motor oil can render 20,000 gallons of potable water unfit to drink.

Some people care about stuff like that.

Do you have a flex-fuel truck? I know that the Motorcraft part number is different for the flex-fuel. It's not the same as the '04-early '06 trucks, but apparently the line setup changed for the early '06s before the filter part # change for flex.

OK.

So that rear blue "pop up" type clip is extremely easy to get lose after seeing these instructions.

Also, the front retention type clip, I understand.

I have the silver removal tool but am having one HELL of a time getting it off.

Do any of you guys have the skid plates on your 4X4? Are you removing them to do this? It's a pain to even see, much less reach that front retention clip.

I just can't see to get the tool into the wider part of the fitting to get it to release from the filter.

Any hints? What am I missing here?

Thanks again,

Duke

Yeah I did. It may also just be the wrong tool. It doesn't say Ford on it but looks identical to your picture. The guy at the valvoline instant oil change said it was the right tool and let me borrow it.

I'm going on a four day road trip, so I'll just trip it again when I get back on Tuesday, except this time I'll go to an auto parts store and ask for the Ford specific tool and see if it's any different.
