Locking Gas Cap

My two year old Stant locking gas cap gave up the ghost on me. I had to drill it off. Of course, I was shocked at how easy this was to do. Just drill a hole in the top, stick a screwdriver in there and turn it off. Anyways, now I am back to the original non-locking cap. I called the dealer, but they don't have anything for the 04s and onward, only for the earlier models.

Does anyone know of a good locking gas cap for these? I'd like to avoid Stant, if possible. They were no help at all.

Try getting it from www.fordpartsonline.com or www.fordpartsfast.com It ended up costing me about $30 for both that and an '07 SportTrac 4X4 emblem including shipping.

Here's the part number for the cap: 6L3Z-9030-AA

Maybe I'm ignorant but I never understood the purpose of a locking gas cap. Can anybody clue me in?

Its to prevent someone from siphoning out your expensive gasoline or a jealous individual or scorned girlfriend/boyfriend from tampering with what's in your tank. Stealing gas is a big problem in some areas of the country.

I'm not so much worried about anyone stealing my gas, as I am about someone vandalizing by putting sugar or some other substance in. This happened to a friend of mine about 40 years ago. It was a real mess to clean up. He saw the traces of sugar before he ran the motor, but nevertheless, cleaning out the fuel tank was a very big job, and I'm sure it would be even bigger on these newer trucks.

I know from drilling off my Stant cap last month that these things are hard to defeat, but they do take a little time and a drill, something a kid won't likely bring to the job with him.

Thanks for all the replies. I don't know why my dealer can't get one of these for the new 04s and up.

There's a flapper valve in the filler neck who's primary purpose is to prevent fuel from running out the filler neck in the event the truck goes shiny side down; this valve also obstructs the filler neck, preventing any hoses from going down into the tank.

Of course, then there's always the jackasses that think it's funny to dump sugar, water, whatever into someone's fuel tank...
