Decoding the Vin # and the door sticker

I can't find any post on how to read what they mean. Will someone post this info for me. Thanks

At the bottom of the page it says 'PDF Format' click on 2005.

You have to use the magnify tool to blow it up.

I would hope that if it were ever perceived I was deliberately sabotaging someone looking for help, I would get called on it.

I will make an 'off the wall' occasionally after a thread expressing need has laid there untouched.
My way of 'bumping it' to the top of the page for the author.

Vehicle Identification Number
The first 3 vehicle identification number (VIN) positions are the world manufacturer identifier.

1FT — Ford Motor Company, USA, truck (completed vehicle)
5LT — Ford Motor Company (Lincoln), USA, truck (completed vehicle)
Brake Type and Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR)

The fourth VIN position is the vehicle brake type and gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) code, all vehicles use hydraulic brakes. This code may also identify the vehicle safety restraint system.

R — 6,001-7,000 pounds GVWR with driver and front passenger air bags — F-150
P — 7,001-8,000 pounds GVWR with driver and front passenger air bags — F-150/Mark LT
V — 8,001-8,500 pounds GVWR with driver and front passenger air bags — F-150
Line, Series and Body Type

VIN positions 5 through 7 indicate the vehicle line, series and body type.

F02 — F-150, rear wheel drive (RWD), regular cab, 6.5 ft. flareside
F04 — F-150, four wheel drive (4WD), regular cab, 6.5 ft. flareside
F12 — F-150, RWD, regular cab, 6.5 ft. or 8 ft. styleside

Check Digit

The ninth VIN position is a government-assigned, computer-generated check digit.


The tenth VIN position is the model year code.

Assembly Plant

The eleventh VIN position is the assembly plant code.

Build Sequence

VIN positions 12 through 17 are an alphanumeric code for the vehicle build sequence. This is also the vehicle serial and warranty number.

Vehicle Certification (VC) Label Locator
