Line of Fire Mounting

I have a Recon Line of Fire LED bar (60") that I'm in the garage attempting to mount and I have a problem (no, it's not an electrical problem).

Those of you who have done this...

Where did you mount the bar?

My tailgate has this 'plunger' looking thing that is on the tailgate. As you open the gate, this 'plunger' thing swings clockwise to a position beneath the rear of the box. That little appendage hits the LOF.

There's little to no way to mount it lower so that it won't be interferred with by the plunger unless I want to mount it on a 'lip'. That lip is fine but, I have nearly nothing to 'stick' to and I'm afraid that the adhesive strips will fail.

Seems like a stupid question here but, how did you guys mount yours?

I am having a hard time seeing someone in a King Ranch with a Line of Fire light strip on the back. Sorry I can't help you with mounting it, I would probably recommend calling the manufacturer for tips on a new Ford Truck. Surely they can help you with mounting their product on the best selling truck in the USA.

I don't think I have that plunger on my STX... any chance of getting a picture of it?

Here's how they look on a Tahoe http://www.westleyweb.com/Dsc04076.jpg. I've got a set of blue TIR3's for the front grill, and wanted to go with all LED's in my 2006.

I had hideaway 1" strobes in my 2000 F150 -- white in the headlights, and amber in the reverse lights. I'm probably just going to put those back in unless I find some other nifty (hidden) way to mount some amber TIR3's in the back.

Anyway, to get sort of back on subject -- I thought about the Line of Fire for my truck, but doesn't flash enough for me. Sorry, not much help with your current problem, but at least you can feel better knowing others are having mounting issues for their FD lights.

Hey RP,

That pin on the bottom of the tailgate is usually there on trucks that came with or have the bed extender. I'm not really sure what it is supposed to do but one is included with the installation kit that came with my OEM bed extender. Sorry I'm no help on the line of fire mounting. I'm just full of......trivia.

What exactly is that little bulge for anyway?

Maybe try this..

Go to lowes and buy 120" of 1/16" strip and screw it to the truck where the line of fire goes..... Spray it black before hand to kinda match the truck...

Then mount the Line of fire to it so it has a flush fit all the way across.

Just an idea. I'm gonna get a line of fire also when I get my roll pan painted and installed... It's sitting here now, just gotta get it painted.

seems there was a pattern on the ford trucks on the pin in/on the tailgate

trucks fron Dearborn and Kansas City have the pin

trucks from Norfork plant DO NOT HAVE and to the best of my knowledge never did

on the 04+ trucks the pin is there to keep the tailgate off the bumper and prevent the tailgate from being damaged / bent when the cables are removed

any weight on the tailgate and something is going to be bent in our opinion

all of our trucks came from Norfork and do not have the pin, we requested that they be built there and they were, probally just a happen so.

when we were looking at trucks for an evaluation vehicle, walking down a row of trucks and those without pins were always from norfork plant

we nver did find a truck from norfork that had the pin

My truck is a flareside, so I had to use the shorter Line of Fire, but I mounted it to the lip. While it is a little more hidden by being further back in there, it remains plenty visible and reflects off the bumper so I think it's actually seen a little better that way.

Just a word of advice; go ahead and screw it into place. The adhesive pads had plenty of space to grip, but they just give up after a while, since they aren't really high-grade adhesive.

Wow there is a lot of helpful feedback in this thread (said sarcastically).

First I'll opine by giving my opinion since there are many others littered through this thread.

The Line O' Fire will look great as it'll give the same effect that many Cadillac’s have. However, instead of the LED strip being above the rear window, it'll be below the tailgate. I mean come on people. A strip of LEDs will not take a luxury truck to redneck hauler. It'll actually give it a luxury taste. I just installed mine and everyone in my family looked at it and said, hmm that looks like the Cadillac long brake light, and none of them know hardly anything about trucks and what they do, they predispose towards redneck hauler. To each his own I guess.

Regarding the thing RP is referencing.

This is a long cylinder type piece of metal which goes into a hole when the tailgate is down to provide additional support for the tailgate.

I put my recon Line o fire, on the metal just above the ride of metal that you see in the middle of the tailgate. This causes the cylinder metal rod to nudge the Line o fire when it goes up and down. So I notched the black plastic on the Line of fire, maybe 2 or 3 centimeters (didn't need much room) and the cylinder metal clears just fine now.

As for the adhering to the tailgate.

I used the 3M adhesive that came with the recon. Then I used my heat gun (you could use a hair dryer, just hold it there longer) to warm up the 3M adhesive and then I stuck it to the metal which I had cleaned with a wet rag.

I thought about doing something to assist with the adhesion to the metal. However, I came back 30 minutes later and the Line o Fire was extremely well stuck to the metal and even pulling very hard would not get it off. So I'm going to leave it that way until I see it start to have issues. Which I don't expect I will. Granted the two outside 3M spots don't hit all metal as the metal is molded and goes away from the light bar. But it still holds very well.

Duke

Thanks Duke... I'll work on trimming out a notch tonight. Good plan.

You don't think it's mounted too far back in there do you? I mean, when I had it 'lightly' stuck so that the shape of the LOF mimmicked that of the lip (the configuration which caused some obstruction with the plunger thingy), it seemed like it was **WAY** back there...
