50K Miles. What do I REALLY need to do??

50K Miles. What do I REALLY need to do??

Ok. So here in a month or so I am gonna drop some cash and do some service stuff to my truck. Here is the list of what I was thinking to do:

1. Change fuel filter
2. Trans. fluid flush/change
3. Replace front pads with ceramic pads
4. Change radiator fluid

These are the things that I don't know if I need to do or not:

1. Change spark plugs
2. Differential Fluid Front or Rear??
3. Transfer case fluid
4. Replace O2 sensors

Finally. What is a rough estimate on what all this should cost me? I don't want to get screwed. Just want to make sure I do what I need to and not waste money on things that don't need done right now.

check your regularly scheduled maintance book, you could always call the dealer and ask how much the 50k mile service will be

I have a couple for ya but not all of them

thinking to do
1. Fuel filter 48.00 at dealer 28.00 DIY but make sure you dont damage the connector
2. transflush 136.00 dealer
3. I am fixing to do this but it is replacing front and rear rotors with drilled and slotted rotors and pads 800.00 advance auto parts
4. looking at 20 bucks for 2 gallons antifreeze and DIY

dontknow if to do
1. sparkplugs looking at 136.00 to DIY but lots of trouble. I think 250 at dealer to do but make sure they will cover plug breakage if it where to occure. They say there stance is 100k on plugs but for a performance level plugs dont last much more than 45000 but they will still work for everyday driving. so it is kinda 50/50 for you on this depending on how much you want to spend.

4. would replace them at every 36000 miles but that is me it ran me 213.00 for all 4 DIY, easy to replace.

I went in at 36000 miles and had the dealer change the oil, flush the transmission and replace the fuel filter and it cost me 226.00, I was in a hurry and didnt have time to do the oil or fuel filter change so that is why I had them do it. hope this helps.

Wow, thanks for the info. I looked in the manual and that is what was confusing me so that is why I am asking. I don't want to just call the dealer and say what do I need, they will try to sell me all kinds of crap. I think I will have the dealer flush the trans and change the fuel filter. I will change the front pads if I can get it jacked up with the jack I have. I think I could also drain the radiator and refill, shouldn't be to hard. The O2 sensors is what I am really unsure of. I would like to do it, but is it worth the cash?? $220 seems like a lot to spend. Also what about the diffs?? The manual says the rear I think is 75K since it is synthetic, but what about the front?? And the spark plug is another I don't know about. When it comes down to it, I will probably only be able to afford to do either the plugs or the 02 sensors, which one should I do then??

I would probably do the O2 sensors first and if money is tight then I would replace the front O2's at a minimum. The front O2 sensor is the main one that controls the AF ratio, the rear just lets the PCM know how efficiant the catalyist is working.

There are a total of four of them right?? I guess I could do the front now and the rear later.

I think I am going to wait till 100K to do the plugs. I also might wait on the rear differential. Ford says it is good for life as long as thier is no leak or other problem. Might just have the tranny fluid changed along with the filter, I have heard some bad things about having it flushed.

Replace the O2s when they quit switching or start switching lazily.

At 50K, all I'd really recommend is your usually schedule servicing (oil change, inspection, etc.), a fuel filter if you didn't do one at 30K, replacing the engine coolant, and a trans service if you didn't do one at 30K.

Plugs are up for debate; yes, there can be problems removing them in higher mileage engines if the proper precautions aren't taken. I did mine at about 27K just 'cause I was curious about what all the commotion was about in removing them. I'd say wait no more than maybe 60K before plug replacement. Besides, I don't believe any spark plug will maintain full effiency at 100K miles.

How do I know when the o2 sensors start switching slowly or not at all??

If you have a problem with your 02 sensors, your check engine light will come on. I've never replaced one and the last 2 vehicles I sold had 171,000 and 179,000 miles on them and the fuel mileage never dropped.

With a scan tool that'll display the O2 waveforms.

The performance minded folks around here seem to think that O2s fall off at around 30-40K miles; I say replace 'em when they quit or start getting lazy, whichever comes first. For the average joe blow, I wouldn't worry about them for at least 100K miles.

If you can lay on your back and stick something in a hole then pull it out, change the fuel filter yourself. A Motorcraft filter costs me $13 , the special tool was $10, all at the parts store. Takes less than 10 minutes to change.

I think I might just do it myself. I imagine there are directions around here somewhere with pics on how to do it. I will have to do some searching. I think I can probably drain and refill the radiator also.

Seems like right now I am going to wait till 100k on the plugs and O2 sensors.

I can do that at least 300 times in 20 minutes

to change the fuel filter do i need to shut to shut off any valves to shut the fuel flow off so the fuel does not come rushing out when i take the filter off????
