clacking in door area
clacking in door area
I got an almost impossible to pinpoint noise from my passenger door area. It sounds like plastic hitting metal (maybe). It is not a constant noise. It happens about 3 to 9 times in about a minute, more or less depending on how it wants to act. Smooth roads, bumpy road, it doesn't matter. It is easier to hear on smooth roads though. Going over bumps doesn't necessarily cause it. It seems like random weight shifts will cause it. I opened the door(s) and shook it but still can't hear it.
I had brought it into the dealer and they were as dumbfounded as I was. I took the mechanic with me on a ride and he could hear it but can't tell what it was. Does anyone have this same issue or have any insight on this?
Mine is an 05 reg cab.

I haven't. That was my last resort because I'm still not exactly sure that it's in the door or not. I wanted to see if someone here has a similar problem and knows exactly where it is coming from before I start tearing into my under warranty truck; or at least so that I can tell the mechanics to.
Thanks for seconding my suspicion though.

Honestly, if it’s under warranty, why would you even care where it’s coming from? Have the dealership correct the issue. Hope that didn’t sound mean, just trying to imply you shouldn’t sweat it.
i had the exact same problem on my last '05.. It was on the drivers door though.. The sound came from the crack between the drivers door and the B pillar.. It almost sounded like it was in the B Pillar and not the door..
But it was exactly like you described, no matter what you did it would make the noise when it felt like it.. It drove me crazy because i couldnt fix it.. I just had the turn the stereo up louder...
I spent hours on it and never figured out what it was.. And i have even less hope for a dealer to find the problem that i have finding it myself..
Sorry im not any help, but i know what you are going though..

for a couple months i was hearing what sounded like a relay clicking or chattering. would only happen every once in a while. i would hear it and it sounded like it was under the drivers seat or under the dash. when i would hear it i would try to pay better attention to where it came from, but then that would be the end of the noise. last weekend i noticed a pair of channel lock waterpumps in bottom of the door pocket. removed them and have not heard the noise since. could be coincidence.
I just got done dynamating my passenger door and I can tell you that there is a lot of play in the wires and handle/lock stuff. also make sure the speaker screws are snug... my drivers side is missing two bottoms and ratlles

Bushtree, mine does sound like it came from the pillar also but no one could say exactly where. I had 3 people try to listen for it but no one could tell. I even tried to listen for it but could not pinpoint it down either. It's a small noise but it's annoying because it comes and goes whenever it wants and I can't predict it. I wouldn't be as annoyed if I could actually predict when it would happen.
I could have them try to fix it but I would bet 90% of the time would be them driving it around and try to look for it while I have no vehicle to use. They spent two days on it already and haven't found anything yet. Worst would be to have them start tearing things apart and the problem still exists. I might bring it in once more and see what the results is before taking matters into my own hands.
Thanks for everyone's inputs.

I have that same problem in my 05 as well. I cant pinpoint it either. So as soon as anybody figures it out. I would love to know as well. Like you said, its annoying, and I HATE sounds that arent supposed to be heard. Makes me think I am driving a piece of junk, not really junk, but makes me think I dont have one of the BEST BUILT TRUCKS out there.
Oh yeah, same thing here. First it was the rear slider window, then something from the dash passenger side (almost sounded like it was outsaide the truck, maybe the trim pice near the windshield?) and then my passenger rear door started having a rattle. Now there's a new one somewhere in the back near the rear window and it's loud as hell when you hit a bump, but damned if I could locate it myself with the truck parked. I took apart my entire rear door, could never find the problem, still makes the darn noise. All that in addition to the crazy whine of the engine every time you are pushing the gas pedal. I am SO tired of the rattles and squeeks in this truck. In fact thinking about it I had a new one last week too! Some kind of metal on metal high pitched scrape/squeek. I got so mad I WD-40'd everything in and out of my truck, and that stopped ONE of the many sounds. Bleh. My '98 F-150 had ZERO noises. This one is creating new ones on a quarterly basis. I cannot WAIT until the '09's come out. I am trading in this one the very second it's possible to drive my new '09 home, absolutely zero doubt of that. Ford really dropped the ball with this model, I mean, you can only turn the radio up so loud to "hide" noises you know are there. I only pray they have learned from their mistakes with the new upcoming model. I just can't believe I have to wait well over a year listening to my engine whine and drive me insane until the new model arrives. I went from praising the F-150 everywhere I went to just not talking about it and hoping the '09's will prove my faith correct again. I hope you're listening Ford, because I am... to every rattle and squeek and crazy engine whine every day I drive to work.
Anyone out there who manages to fix their noises, CONGRATS! I have taken my truck apart looking for these noises, and failed to find them all but the WD-40 time. Please let the 09's be quiet... please let the quiet steel actually keep out the horrific Triton engine whine... Please new 2009, help me forget the sounds of this '04... please...

Ok, had the same noise on the drivers side door of my 2009 regular cab XL with manual windows. Turns out the window cables criss cross each other, and there is a foam sleeve where they cross. The sleeve slipped all the way to the bottom and it rattled to beat heck. Sounded like metal to metal but it was the window cables. Checked the speaker also, but it's solid, held on by 4 6mm screws. Also checked the door know, and the plastic clip is good. Doesn't look like the door latch could cause any noise, it's in a cable with a square shaped rubber sleeve. Anyway, no pics, but here is the take apart sequence. Pop the trim piece behind the door latch handle first (8mm), it pop's out left to right, needs a pretty good tug. Next the trim panel in the door pull, pops down and out (7mm). Then the window crank handle trim piece, it covers the actual spline (T15), then the 2 6mm screws on the bottom of the door. Lift it up about 1.5", then out. The door latch will remain attached, you can take it off if you want by pushing on the right side tabs, but you don't have too. Lift the plastic cover in about the middle, then you can feel the cables. Pull the sleeve back up, and zip tie it, down.
