Whistling at 75+ MPH? Common?

Since day one on my truck, I've noticed this high pitch whistling in the cab at around 75-80MPH.

I can't really tell where it's coming from. I got some painters tape and taped up the surrounds for the lower fog lights, taped the area between the upper windshield and roofline and also taped up the little gap where the wiper cowls meet up.

I'd read these were likely areas that would cause the whistling.

None of it worked. Taping up those areas had no affect, so if this is wind noise (and I assume it is), I can not locate what is causing the issue. Maybe it's the entire wiper cowl or maybe even the wiper arms or blades themselves. Something up there is catching the wind wrong.

Has anyone located this source? I can slow down and I get it around 70-71 MPH, then quiet until around 76-80 MPH.

I'm on the highway alot and 75-80 is my cruising speed to and from work. This whistling is giving me headaches.

Any other areas that I might look at?

People say turn up the radio, but I'm extremely audio sensitive, for starters, and can't have it that loud. For another, I frequently listen to Stern or comedy programming on Sirius and this high pitch whistle bleeds right through.

My driver's side mirror vibrates like my Vtwin motorcycle mirrors when I hit over 60MPH too...

I'm going to have the dealer check both of these when I go for first oil change and service. Any TSB's on whistling noise or mirror vibrations on an 2006?

I have an 06 F150 Lariat, Styleside, 5.5' bed, 5.4l Triton, Supercab. I just turned 2,800 miles on this brand new truck.

Sure would appreciate any help. Or if anyone had success with a dealer fixing this problem, I definitely want to hear about it!

Thanks in advance.

I also have a 5.5' bed Supercab with the 5.4L. I am pretty sure it's the windshield seal. They tried to reseal mine, which helped a little bit but then it came back. Freaking bastards! I'll have to take it in one of these days and see if they will remove/replace the window.

Just rolled 30K on my '05 Lariat Screw, rarely get above 78mph, but this has been one of the quietest vehicles I've ever owned.

I know exactly what you're talking about and there are a ton of us that have this problem every year when it starts getting cold. Nobody has an idea of what it is and so far nobody has been able to replicate it with the dealer. I honestly don't feel it's wind noise because the sound is too high pitched.

I think it has to do with the fuel going into then engine at high speeds on a cold day.

It's certainly not fuel. Sheesh...

I bought my truck in May, when it's 100+ out every day. I can tell you with almost 100% certainty that the whistling noise being described is the windshield. Mine STILL does it, and has done it every day since I got the truck.

Maybe we're talking about two different things then. Mine only does it during the winter and it's a very high pitched whistle and can go away when getting off the throttle. Imagine blowing across an open beer bottle but much higher in pitch. That's what I'm talking about.

Hi.

Try taping those two roof channels.

Also, if you have a sunroof, try taping around the seal.

Try taping the hood/fender gap.

Temporarily remove the wiper arms.

Just farting out ideas ...

A very, very, very thin bead of black RTV along my entire windshield molding fixed mine. Used the same stuff to fix that cowl gap as well - did not like it 'cause it was always popping apart..

Good luck.

cheers

It's definitely not a cold weather issue. I'm in Tampa... cold is a relative term here!

I'll keep working on this, I guess... annoying as hell!

A suggestion: Find a smoke candle(like the AC techs use to check for duct leakage). Fabricate a piece of double wall cardboard to fit over a rear window(easier to make rather than front window).Roll up the other 3 windows. The idea is to pressurise the cab with a fan of some type(oscillating or window).Light off the smoke candle and allow the smoke to be picked up by the fan. You SHOULD find any leak, unless it's of a very low flow.

Hmmm... good concept, but I think there are too many exit points in the cab - door skins/drain holes, and those two ventilation flaps on the rear wall of the cab - they open up with overpressure. The whistle may not even be an interior leak, but an exterior noise being heard in the cab itself, or if it is a leak, it's very small.

Good thinking, though.

BTW - Just got another brainfart - see if you can borrow/rent an SPL meter with a directional/remote pickup. Have a passenger move it around various suspected areas in the cab while at speed & whistling - the meter should spike if you found the culprit.

Cheers
Bubba

Try folding in your side mirrors.

Do a search on the subject. It was discussed a while back, I seem to recall that some fixed it with tape over a certain area.

Thanks, and not to be a jerk, but if you read my post carefully you will find that I've already done a search and already taped up the culprit areas suggested in previous posts... all with no luck.

Smoke candle is probably out of the question, but I might be able to get a hold of an SPL meter... distinct possiblity there.
