MAF Sensor Cleaning

So.. I'm sitting here looking at this thing with a can of electrical contact cleaner in hand...

Do I just spray the bejesus out of this thing? I know that screwing around with the tiny little wires in the unit is a cardinal sin...

Hints? Help? There's lots of info on the board for cleaning the 'other' style sensor but little to none that I've found for ours... any help is much appreciated...Muchas gracias...

A little dab'll do ya.

Don't hose the sensor down. A few blasts, from about 4-6" away is all it takes. Allow to air dry, don't use compressed air or a towel or anything to dry the wires before reinstalling.

And while you're doing this, disconnect the battery and flip the headlight switch on to reset the keep alive memory. Make a few half throttle or heavier accelerations up to about 40-50 mph to reset the BARO reading.

kinda puts things into a perspective when RP is asking for help

Just b.c we normally see him offering help and think of him as an all knowing source...

Any necessity in the battery drain?

RP i think resetting the comp with the battery drain, is a good b.c if the MAF was dirty, it may not be running optimal, sure the computer may eventually adjust its self to the new unobstructed air flow. But this is kinda a manual over ride to make the comp retune itself..

Correct me if im wrong

No problem.

Resetting the KAM isn't absolutely vital, since heavy acceleration will reset the BARO reading regardless, but when making adjustments or services like cleaning MAFs, I like to start from scratch with the fuel trims.

You probably won't notice a difference one way or the other, and you can't really tell any difference without a scan tool that can display BARO and MAF volts. In either case, just be sure to make a few half throttle or heavier accelerations afterwards to reset the BARO.

Just kinda curious though, why are you cleaning the MAF?

HAHA... yep. I guess I'm a MAF detailer too. Maybe I'll add that to my 'services offered' flyer...

Hard to tell any difference -- in fact, I don't think I do at all. But, I just oiled my AF1 and it hadn't been cleaned previously. I figured it was time to make it happen...

Isnt the cleaning oils with the filters what makes the MAF dirty in the first place? Ill probably clean my K&N and then a week later or so clean the MAF

Hey RP,

So how often do you (or is it suggested ) to clean and oil the AF1? And then even time you clean and oil the AF1, you're supposed to clean the MAF?

While I'm on the topic....did you replace any O2 sensors or your belt when you did the AF1 and XCal2?

I'm on the knifes edge of calling TP today and I want to research and see if I should be ordering other stuff too. My birthday is Oct 18th and I know it's a seriously fat chance but how sweet would it be to install this stuff on my birthday!

In Rp's case it was more dust from all the waxes rather than the oil.

Not sure I know the answer to the 'how often' question. I have heard of folks doing it every 6k but, to me, that seems excessive for my driving style. I think I'll probably resort to every 10 - 15k if I keep this truck in it's current scheme.

No to the 02 and no to the belt. I've only heard the 'chirp' from the belt once and that was when I was, shall we say, 'opening it up'. I may go to a gatorback if and when I need to change belts or notice a more pronounced chirp. Until then though...

Oct. 18th eh? I'm the 21st.
