Thinking Of... Trade the 5.4 for the 4.6?
Trading in my 05 Lariat Super Crew with the 5.4L in for and 06 XLT Super Cab with the 4.6L to save a little gas. What the difference in gas milage between the 2. Will there be a noticable difference or not.
My personal truck is an 05 XLT SCrew 4.6L 4x2. My work truck is an 06 XL Scab 5.3L 4x2 Longbed (for now). Next week I get a brand new 06 XLT SCab 5.3 4x2 (regular bed).
I run dual residences over 300 miles apart, and have driven that road between numerous times in each truck. My work truck hardly EVER gets over 14 mpg, and thats over the span of 8,000 miles (85% highway). My personal truck has 21,000 miles (65% highway) and I was lucky to get over 16mpg. I have driven both loaded, unloaded, speeding, not speeding, etc.
Lately, by slowing down from running 70-80 consistently down to 65-75, my personal truck has been getting close to 19mpg highway. The only way my work truck gets better milage was when I had 2500lbs in the bed, and for whatever reason I averaged 15.5mpg (granted, I was going from West Texas down to the Gulf). Otherwise, it doesn't matter how I drive it. I consistently get 12-14mpg.

yeah say you love 5 grand on the trade....youll never make that money up on saving gas. its pointless.
just as i say people buying hybrids now....and SUVS are marked down lik 15 grand....well why spend 5 extra grand on a hybrid version....when you can buy a regualr full size SUV for 15 grand off? youll never save 20 grand difference in gas.

Cory, the trade you propose would be a HUGE mistake! You'd have to drive the truck for 300 years before you'd even come close to breaking even on the gas savings, and you'd curse the under-powered nature of the 4.6 engine for the entire time!
Now you don't REALLY want to kick yourself for the next 300 years, do you?

Before I bought my 05 xlt screw 5.4 2wd I thoroughly researched all the big and small v8 engines of the big three and came to the conclusion that the 4.6 and 5.4 get very similar mileage but the 5.4 has much better performance numbers. A friend of mine bought an 05 xlt screw 4.6 2wd a week after me and he gets the same mileage as me, 17.5 mpg average per tankful. So really it's no change at all between the two. We both drive 50 miles a day to and from work and have the same driving styles as well as highway/city driving characteristics.

yea the idea of trading in a vehical to get 1-2 miles a gallon better is totally insane the money u lose on the trade in will pay for your gas for the next 3 years,
u allways lose on a trade i dont care what they tell u. especially a 1-2 year old vehical

sounds like you are just bored of the truck and want something different. You will still lose on the trade by getting a deisel.
Some of you guys complaining about your mileage are driving 65-70mph on the freeway, go figure. Why don't you take things down a notch and try 55mph one day on cruise control (if you don't use cruise don't even try it). You'll be amazed at the difference in gas consumption.

The flow of traffic is at least 70 unless it is rush hour, and at night it goes up to 75-80 in many parts. 55 Is seriously not an option lol
