Air Condition Noise

I think I'm having a problem with my AC when I turn it on. After turning on the AC you hear this loud clicking noise as if a piece of paper or something is on the belt & slapping against something when it goes around. I've only got 1600 miles on my 06. Anyone else out there having this problem or has experienced it in the past. Taking it back to dealership Monday morning. If I had to guess, it sounds like something is wrong with the compressor. Maybe it has a bad bearing or something. AC still blows out cold air & you can only hear it if you're outside the vechile or sitting idle with the windows down. Going to St. Louis in about 3 weeks & sure not about to go in the heat & the damn AC break down on me.

What you're hearing is the clutch on the compressor engaging and disengaging. I took my 05 to the dealer a few weeks back because the compressor was cycling too rapidly...so I thought. In other words, I was hearing a lot of "clicking". Turns out that nothing was wrong and there is probably nothing wrong with your's. But it never hurts to get it checked out.

Thanks for the help guys. I'll let you know what the dealer says this week. This heat will kill me if I don't have some AC. I work in a freezer that is -30 degrees Celcius at a pharmaceutical company.

If it's making a loud clicking noise, I would take it in as soon as possible. Sounds like the same problem I was having. Still blowed out cold air but it just made that loud noise like something was on the belt when it went around. Summer is almost here & it would really suck to have the AC go out on you while on vacation or something. Just my .02

Just to add to this. If you AC compressor is clicking rapidly it also could be a sign that your low on freon. This is also a problem in the 06 because a lot of the trucks went out in 06 with a low amount of freon

Thanks EX4ME for the info, into the shop tomorrow to have a look at. My clicking seems to be about 20 seconds apart, was this similar to what you experienced? Did it ever go away and come back?

Just got back from the Ford Dealer Service Dept. They said the noise I heard was normal. Getting plenty of cold air but it does seem odd to hear the AC kick in and out so often, never picked up on it in any other vehicle before. The tech also said if it was 100 degrees out the AC would be cycling like every 5 seconds instead of every 15 or 20 seconds like it does today. What do you all think?

Interesting, Smithy. I'm getting the same thing with my 06 XLT Screw. I was really surpised at how loud the click is when standing outside the vehicle. I'm going to see if I can get the vehicle in on Tuesday for the dealer to check it out. I've got a tough time thinking that so loud a noise would be considered "normal."
