Fabtech 6" Installed, LOSING CV BEARINGS!

There are some images to feast on. Those bearings above are being found in my garage, seems to be they come out when I drive a little bit. Luckily I found 11 so far in my garage, if you can call that luck, and I'm not even looking hard so there may be others. If they're CV bearings there should only be 12, 6 for each cv axle. I do not hear anything wrong at slow speeds but anything above 5mph I hear a bad grinding and clacking from my front wheelwells. I'm sure it's due to these ball bearings. I'm in need of some help, this is my daily driver and I missed a class today because of it. If anyone can verify these are cv bearings, I'd appreciate it. They are about 1/4" in diameter, maybe 3/8".

Josiah that's all they can be. There's no other part anywhere on the whole truck that uses bearings like that.

If you don't have time to take the axles out to get them in you need to apply vacuum to your PVH's and cap them.

When vacuum is not applied to the PVH's the truck is in 4X4; that's why the front axles will turn with the wheels when the engine is off. When you start the engine, vacuum unlocks the PVH's and put you in 4X2 mode.

You definately shouldn't be driving or even rolling the truck with those bearings out. You're going to damage the CV housing and bearing carrier.

They can't fall out once the axles are installed. They must have fallen out when they were removed or dangling during the lift installation.

Get those suckers back in there already!

Hey Josiah,

I called van's autoparts for remanufactured axle halves for you and they don't have them for the new body style yet. They have them up to the 04 heritage edition. Incase anyone was curious the price was $69.95 each with lifetime warranty. Sorry about that.

They may not be available aftermarket yet. If they're still a dealer only item they're $195 each.

Remove the axle nut, unbolt the upper ball joint, maybe have to unbolt the tierod from steering knuckle and pull the axles out.

You forgot to remove the dustcap (I can't remove that without bending it for the life of me) Anyways, I was looking under there and cannot see a damn way they could be falling out and I definitely did not see them when I was doing work under there. They were easy as hell to see and I did not see a single one. I found the 12th one, if these do go to the cv axle, these bearings are only 1/4 of an inch in diameter, and 6 per axle? These don't seem like they'd do the job, can anyone verify if these are the correct size? I'm going to make a few phone calls, I can't believe this happened.

Thanks a lot deerfeed, I really appreciate that.

Baja, do you have a part number for Item #8 in your diagram its the PVH. I think the one on my right side is bad. It is a little chewed up when I took it apart last weekend and when you apply vacuum it won't hold. I got a dealer price for it but I wanted to look online.

I don't get how his bearing fell out to begin with. I just did an install and looked at those half shafts. I don't remember how anything could have come out of them? Just trying to help out anyone else who may do this.

Good luck Josiah!

I don't want to just jump into this install if they're going to fall right back out or not even solve my problem (i.e. bearings came from somewhere else). I just dont see how such small cv bearings are doing the deed, Honda's have bigger cv bearings than this.

Sorry it only says 3C247 in the Ford manual, but I think that's only the base of the part number and not the prefix and suffix.
