K&N Panel... Probably old news...

Added a K&N panel filter at 300 miles, filled up the tank at empty, and had a long drive over to the coast this morning.

Averaged 17.6 mpg with A/C off for the 76 mile drive to the east coast. Got 16.8 mpg on the drive home with A/C on.

Last tank of gas on OEM filter, averaged 12.8 on all highway miles. Has anyone else experienced gas MPG increase in this manner? I have had a K&N on every vehicle I have every owned, and not experienced a gain in MPG anywhere quite like this.

I had one in for about 2 months and didn't notice any differance in mileage then I upgraded and got an True Flow cold air intake and still haven't seen any noticable gains yet.

How clogged was your stock one? 12.8 all highway? At sea level? I would burn my truck where it sat if it ever did that. I get better than that in ALL city driving at 6800 feet. My highway is pretty close to what yours is with your K&N.

Put a paper one back in for a while and see if it changes again. That sounds like some other factors came into play there. Never heard of a k and n increasing that much just cause its a k and n. Unless your old one was really clogged as mentioned previously.

Fellas, I am not saying my K&N was soaked in snake oil. This truck is 410 miles old, 8 days. I probably should have asked the real question. Are these trucks that bad on the first couple of tanks of gas? How tight are the new 3V 5.4s?

Both of my Lightnings in the past were pretty consistent on mpg(crappy), and I was not expecting my mileage to change too much.

Should I not be resetting my mpg readout with every tank refill?

I am just looking for answers, not making claims...

Could be your pcm learning your driving habits. That new its still trying to figure things out. I doubt the engine is overly tight brand new as they claim they really dont need breaking in. Be careful taking it in for warranty service, if you have MAF problems they will blame it on the K and n oil soaking the MAF. I never had any problems with mine but they did it to my buddies 04.

I get like 13 mpg average. I don't know how you guys are getting much higher than that. It's not like I drive like a maniac.

I have never had any issue with warranty work with any vehicle I have purchased at Mullinax Ford. They have always been very good with all service visits. I have had 2 modded Lightnings in there before, with never a concern.

I guess I will give it time on the new 06, and see what the mpg works out to be. As long as it is better than the 9-10 mpg I was getting with the Lightning, I will have NO complaints.

Thanks.

I live in Texas which is a relatively low altitude...which makes it even more confusing why I only get 13 mpg...I have 3.55 gears and stock tires, you'd think I'd be doing much better than that.

My best mileage was the 1st 3 tanks of gas, 15.8 at 5400 ft/ city driving. Put the K&N in and have since been getting 14-14.8 MPG since. Here in Denver thoough and the winter blended fuels don't help at all. Gonna put a new paper filter in and see if there is a difference.

last tank was 14, city. 3.55s. w/ K&N filter. I'm really thinking that those drop-ins don't really do anything.

I'm in parker down the road from you. The winter fuel typically costs me 1 or 2 mpg too. I'll bet your mileage comes back up when spring arrives. I don't mind the winter fuel so much if winter would actually arrive. One warm day after another...where is our snow?
