Noisey Lifters or ???

Hi all,

On my 2005, the engine sounds noisey. To me it sounds like lifters tapping. I asked one of the Ford techs about it and he said it was normal. He said it was the fuel injection.
Anybody elses sound like that??

Thanks Jon

Yep. It's the injectors opening and closing. Actually, if all goes quiet, watch out for hydrolock.

Actually it might be a cam phaser problem. When does it tick? If it only does it when the engine is fully warmed up and only at idle its probably the cam phasers. If so it will sound louder if you stand beside either front tire or just behind tire, sounds like an old hydraulic lifter noise. If its just a very lite ticking sound heard on top of engine then its just the injectors. There is a TSB out on the cam phasers, its a warranty repair.

Mine is in the shop right now with other issues as well.

I asked them about the noise at idle and they mentioned the injectors.. which is what I figure they're going to try to pass it off as. Mine only does it after the engine gets to operating temp. as SAJEFFC said.

The thing sounds more like a Powerstroke after it warms up. Pretty annoying sitting in traffic and at a drive-thrus.

Guess I'll wait and see what they decide to do about it.

They sure seem awfully worried about the injectors for some reason. I know they had one in the shop post-hydrolock when I took mine in. Maybe they're just gunshy or maybe it's a more common occurence than what I've heard about.

Got a TSB number on the cam phaser issue? I did a search for "Cam Phaser TSB" with no result! I am going to pick my truck up from the dealer this morning. They said the noise is "Normal". They did replace my rotors and calipers, driveshaft, and update the flash...........

my engine clicks too.. i noticed it seems to get louder after i put my Flowmaster SI/DO on.. not sure why this would cause my engine to become more noisy.. however i think it could be cause of how much ive revved it sence i've gotten my new exhuast.. but hey can yea blame me??
anyway.. either this is just what the engine sounds like when its been broken in.. or i've managed to ruin something by simply revving it up..

No CC, sorry but I don't. Quintin may come along later and have he. If you mention it to your dealer they will know about it trust me. Its a somewhat common problem but when its fixed the idle is sooo much quieter as it should be.

The Akebonos all but solved the problems on their own (which is why I'm late having the TSB done) they eliminated the shudder except when coming down from high speed repeatedly, or a long down hill. No dust with these pads at all, and good stopping power! They did the driveshaft lube (!), and the reflash is pretty impressive, runs better overall, with much better bottom end response. The shifts are reasonably crisp now. If the Cam Phaser TSB eleminates the noise issue, I'm happy.

Interesting variance of responses. It almost sent me out screaming into the night...well almost.

It's like what SAJEFFC said "sounds like an old hydraulic lifter noise" equally upon start up, warmed up etc. None of my other FI cars have ever been so audible. Anyway, maybe I'll hold a screw driver up to my ear and scan the top of the motor and see If I can isolate it down a little.
