Bed extender blues
Bed extender blues
As an early Christmas gift my wife got me a bed extender. Fantastic price from Redding Ford, 40 bucks plus 40 bucks shipping. Brand new OEM part.
They sold 10 of them in about two hours on e-bay the other night. Should have bought as many as I could, but we couldn't believe the deal. Was worried till it came in. Exactly as advertised. OEM.
So I had to order parts to attach it. First problem. Dealerships (3) had no clue. None.
Got the part numbers for what I thought were the parts in this forum.
Ordered it from Titus Ford (www.Fordparts.com). From various posts I thought I would need 1 w707381-s900 bolt kit. Wrong, I needed two. I will order one local on Tuesday.
It appeared I would need 2 W520414-S309 'washer' kits.
They are actually cheap bolts. Two in a bag, if you want them, you would only need two, not four. Fortunately, they fit the bolt that I use. So I only have two extras...
None of these numbers are the four rubber grommets. So far, no dealer has ever heard of these grommets. I finally dragged a parts guy out and pointed at them in a new truck. He suggested they only come with the trucks new...
I will skip what I suggested. Probably anatomically impossible...
So I made my own grommets, but will still try and find a parts guy that has a clue.
Next woe, apparently on the SuperCrew there is something behind the bed to Screw the bolt into.
Not on my 6.5 foot STX. Just bare metal back there.
No big deal, I pulled a taillight and got a huge heavy (shock absorber) washer and a small washer to exactly center the bolt. Snugged down tight on one side and I will get another bolt eventually to finish the job.
So plan on doing more than just bolting one in, if you don't have the SuperCrew.
On the other hand, knowing that you just need two trick bolts, two nuts and some big honkin washers should help someone. The bolts look just like slightly shorter versions of the bolts the tailgate latch on.
The grommets I made by turning down some shock rubber biscuits. It will do till I get the right parts. Or I could just leave them. Black looks OK inside the bed.

Gf was thinking of getting me one of these for christmas, for like 169+s&h. Care to link me to the listing? Thats a great price so I'm assuming they're gone. So it is the OEM bed ext. correct, did you bother to snap any pics? If you can find the part numbers I'd appreciate it if you'd post everything needed that does not come with the bed extender. Can't wait to see it, what a steal.

These are the parts that the locking pin goes into?
Not the locking pin or it's parts that are on the extender, the two per side places that the pin goes into when you lock it.
And yes, I don't really need it too much for long stuff, it's to keep things near the tailgate. I've been using a cargo bar set about six inches high, this will be better. It fits very nicely under my Fold-a-Cover.
The place sold these ten as extra stock. Don't see anymore from them. One of those fantastic deals you hit sometimes.

On those parts, dunno where they would go in the bed. The bushing is 5 bucks with 10 bucks shipping. So for four of them....
and the "pin" is 31 bucks? Whats it for?
I need one bolt, w707381-s900, that part I know because I already ordered and recived one.
The four rubber grommets with holes in them are what I'm looking for.
I suppose they could be called bushings. But bushing locking pin? I don't really see that involved anywhere.
So like the other part numbers I have seen, I don't think these are the parts I'm looking for.
I suspect I will not be able to buy them. Well, the home made ones will work fine, I supose.

YL3Z-84286A54-AA does match for the bushing or donut.
The other part number is the pin that goes into it. My two pins look fine, so now if I can find the bushings for less than 30 bucks I will be in good shape.

I just install the bed extender myself on my scab. Got it at ebay too. I got the 4 rubber bushing that the locking pin goes into at my dealer. I just told them that i need the rubber thing for the bed extender that the locking pin goes into. It cost me $6.35 ea. I have the plastic bag with the part # on it in my house. But i'm out of town right now, and won't be back till monday. Like you said on the scab we don't have the welded t-nuts on the bed wall panel. I install it by removing the tail light with the t-nuts also. The 4 rubber bushing you just pop it in place, holds the locking pin much better.
Thanks radz. I'm pretty sure that is the part number, but the local shop won't be open for a couple days, and Titus Ford only has 2 of them in stock, so I either will go ahead and use my home made ones and save 30 bucks, or will order them. Depends on my mood when I buy that last bolt.
So if you are adding an OEM bed extender to these trucks and it does not come with hardware, plan on buying
2 w707381-s900 bolts
2 W520414-S309 nuts to go on the two bolts. You would need these if you are putting the bolts into a non-SuperCrew bed. They go on the bolts.
4 YL3Z-84286A54-AA Grommets or rubber washers.
Cost on the bolts list is 9.24 each. Usually sold for 6.93 each.
Cost on the nuts list is 2.95 pair. Usually sold for 2.21 pair
Cost on the grommets list is 6.38 each. No dealer price handy.
You also need 2 large washers to use on the back of the bolts inside the bed.
I would also suggest two small washers that just fit the bolt and just fit the hole to center the bolts. I had lots of those in my nuts/bolts drawers.
So cost on the parts, always listed on e-bay as 'about or under' 20 bucks, is actually about 45 bucks with sales tax or online with shipping.
Even if you were putting these on a SuperCrew, unless the grommets were already there the cost would be only 3-4 bucks less.
Not out of line, just higher than reported.
Now if you are cheap or trying to do it as low ball as possible, you can make your own grommets out of shock biscuits... messy job, takes about five-ten minutes a grommet. Cost zero if you are like me and have that kind of junk left around from other projects.
If you are REALLY cheap, you can drop by a pick-a-part and round up two tailgate bolts and use them instead of the correct bolts. I'm not quite that cheap, but I have to admit I thought about it when the 'two bolt' package turned out to only be one bolt...

I found a dealer that had the one bolt I still needed to complete my installation of the OEM bed extender.
For those that have the extenders or even have them as a option this post is not worth reading.
For those that want to put an extender on a Regular cab or a SuperCab it hopefully answers the questions that I had prior to this endeavor.
The SuperCrew OEM extender fits nicely on the 6.5 foot cab.
The holes (3 to a side) are already in the bed.
The block or mount that the Screw has is NOT in the bed.
The parts:
Pivot bolts (2 needed) W707381S900 retail 9.24.
Grommets/rubber biscuits (4 needed) YL3Z-84286A54-AA retail 6.38
If you are putting these in a Regular or SuperCab add (1 two piece pack) W520414S309 retail 2.95
You will also need two washers, very heavy and round with a hole in the center large enough to fit the Pivot bolt through. The pivot bolt is a 10MM shaft, or almost 7/16 of an inch hole.
You will also need two small washers as centering washers to keep the pivot bolts exactly centered in the holes already in the bed.

Rather than wait two weeks and paying 25 bucks plus tax, I turned four shock absorber rubber donuts down on the drill press till they fit nicely. This method cost zero, and the extender fit a little firmer than the stock grommets.

You may want to spend the money, especially if you don’t have to wait as long where you are.
The taillights come out very easy; two screws and they pop out. There are two male prongs that pop into plastic holders on inside the bed. 8mm socket is the only tool needed. The two wire harnesses unclip.

This gives you lots of room to access the back of the three holes.
I used shock washers as they are big, heavy and the exact right size. They are also free, usually.

Hi Josiah, you do see them on for sale in the 100-125 range sometimes. 82 bucks shipped for mine was a really great deal; don't know if you will see that soon.
It locks in either position.
You pull two big locking handles and pivot it to the other location. Then you push the locking handles/pin back into place. There are color markings to tell you it is securely locked.
When locked in either position it is very tight.
No bouncing or wiggle when you drive. My wife can flip it over by herself in about two minutes. My hands are stronger (for pulling and pushing in the locking pins) so I can do it in thirty seconds.
To remove it takes about a minute.
If it was not under a tonneau I would put locks on it. There were some posts showing the best way places to put small padlocks last year.
On these tall beds it fits great under the tonneau.
It is not as heavy as it looks.
