Question on Ride quality and Gas Mileage

After driving my 1970 Chevy 3/4 ton for 22 years, I am finally going to pop for a new truck. I have looked at them all and decided on a f150. My question … Does the 2 x 4 ride quality differ from the 4 x 4? Is there a considerable difference in gas mileage? I would like the 4 x 4 , but I really do not use it off road that much to warrant a poorer ride and less gas mileage. I look forward to joining the group.

Thank you

Gary

I've owned the 04 screw lariat 4x2 and now a 05screw lariat 4x4. The ride quality is the same to me very smooth. I've notice about a 2mpg difference in the 05 4x4 about 14 in town and 16 on hwy. But the 4x4 just looks so much tougher. Hope this helps.

Around town I get about 15 mpg, hav consistantly got 20mpg on long, highway driving trips. Cant comment on the ride quality between the two vehicles, but my 4x4 rides quite well.

Back in the 70's maybe the ride quality on a 4by4 was pretty rough ... hell even the 80's & 90's. Now the current F150 rides almost identical to its little sister the 4by2. Gas mileage will suffer but I put about 800 miles on a 4by2 and it got about .5 mpg better than my FX4 does.

I have the crew 4X4. Very nice ride. I like it better that my wife's Tahoe! Solid, yet comfy. Gas mileage is okay. 11 in town and 15 on the hwy. It only has 3000 miles on it so, hopefully it'll improve.

F-150 4x4 with 17inch tires and wheels here. Great riding truck. It's better than my old 2x4 truck. The best mileage I've gotten is 17.3 highway and 14.25 city. At 70k miles, my highway miles here in California has been down to 14.25. I'm working on the reason why this is, but I believe the traffic here has a lot to do with it.

Happy trucking

Chevy's had, and still do, have a smoother ride than Ford. Ford started putting some effort into improving the ride back in the 90's. It's quite a bit better now, but still not as good as Chevy. However, no company comes close to Ford when you're talking interior creature comforts and quality of materials. I feel a lot safer with Ford and that heavy duty frame than I would with any other truck.

The 4X2 Fords do offer a smoother ride than the 4X4's. But, my FX4 rides like a Cadillac on the highway. In the city, the ride can be a little rough. It's not a big difference, but I notice it.

I got roughly 2 MPG more in a 4X2 than a 4X4. But, one must take into account the 4X4 tires rob some mileage as does the 3.73 ratio rear end (my 4X2 has .355 gears). No matter which you choose, I would highly recommend the 5.4L engine. I like the 4.6L, but it definitely didn't give me much better gas mileage than the more powerful 5.4L.

I love my 05 FX4 it is very smooth and has ample room for the family. i would go 4 wheel drive. They tend to hold their value better as well as may be able to get you out of some tight spots in the mud or in the winter. I have been through trucks and have learned my lessons. I will always get AT LEAST a V6 and they will always be 4 wheel drive. Good luck.

I don't see how the current chevies could compare to the newest model f150 in ride quality. the technology in the Ford isa simply better, newer, and meant to provide the most amazing ride quality ever found in a truck. and I think they did just that.
