Bluetooth in our F150...is it possible?

Hey Guys,

So my cell phone broke today and I'm going to have to buy a new one. One of the ones I'm looking at has bluetooth and I would really like to get that feature to work in my truck since I do a lot of driving and have client calls while I'm driving.

Is there a way to get bluetooth to work through our stero? I have the audiophile system if that makes any difference.

I apreciate any help or info anyone can provide.

Thanks,

Duke

I think you can buy a Ford add on Bluetooth kit, but I don't know what's all involved in installation and set up of it.

Bluetooth

When we bought our Explorer last year I was looking at a brochure on the Freestyle and 500. In the add-on section there was a dealer installed bluetooth unit. It slipped on the visor, but that is all I know. I would imagine that it can be used on any vehicle.

I just got a Motorola phone w/ bluetooth. Got a headset to go with it. Lots cheaper than an add on unit in the truck, plus it goes with you.

Hey adaniels88,

Where did you install this and how much was it? Any details you can share on the install?

Does it turn down the radio when you recieve a call?

Thanks,

Duke

The thing I don't like about the headsets is they'd have to be somewhere accessible. Also I'd be on conference calls for about an hour or so, so the headset could get burdensome.

However, if I can't get this thing set up for less than $500 then I'll look more in-depth into a headset. I have a lot of research to do.

Anyone have the Ford setup?

I think I found the Ford option. Looks kind of cheap for $387. I'd like to have something that didn't stick out or sit on top of the dash. Is there any simple system that includes a microphone for the visor, a button behind the steering wheel to push for it to turn on and then it intergrates with the stock audio system?

I have a Motorola IHF1000 bluetooth handsfree going through the factory sound system. I have been taking about it in the Other Audio Forum https://www.f150online.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=206820. Yes, it sticks onto the dash, but I thought that it looked good matching the chrome A/C vent rings, and the voice dialing and voice commands are great since I don't have to look at anything to get caller ID info or look at a menu for anything.

Thanks for the update and telling me about your thread. I'm going to read it now. I think I saw the system you're talking about from Motorola. It did look tastefully done. Maybe I could stick it in the black space between the reverse sensing button and the cigarette lighter, like someone did with this Ford System.

Getting a Motorla system would be nice because the phone is going to be a Motorola. I think I'm going to stay with my Nextel service provider because the coverage has been awesome here in MN. The only other one that really competes up here in my opinion is Verizon. The motorla system from what I've read is bluetooth 1.2 and the major downside to the Ford system is it's bluetooth .96, so it doesn't allow you to use all the bluetooth features of your phone.

I have a lot of reading to do. Thanks for the information about your thread, I'm excited to read it.

Thanks,

Duke

I've had a thread or two about it here in 04-06... do a quick search.

BTW, that's the Ford add-on unit in your last post. Looked pretty cheap to me and thus, I opted to get a nice BT earpiece (Plantronics).

Yeah I've been reading them all day today. Doing that and waxing the parents cars. Clay, #80, NXT wax, and #26. They are looking darn good though.

I'm think I'll go with the Motorolla system shown below and mount it into the ash tray. It'll fit perfectly in there and be completly hidden. So when the phone rings or I want to make a call, I'll just push the ash tray and out it will pop. Then the mirophone wire will run behind the day then up the pillar with the handle by the door and mount at the top of that interior molding.

It'd be cool if I could find a place to mount this one to make it look custom and built in. But I think the easiest one would be the motorolla one in the ash tray.

I have had a hard wired Parrot Ck-3300 (CK-3100 plus bluetooth GPS) mounted in my truck for almost a year now and its the best thing since sliced bread! I use it with my Palm Treo 650 and it works great. It has voice recognition/dialing, a screen for caller ID, a phonebook that "imported" all of my phonebook entries from my phone and a bluetooth GPS.

It has a remote microphone that is mounted by my rear view mirror, the sound is wired up to my stereo and when I get/make a call, it automatically cuts out the stereo sound and I hear my phone conversation through all of my stereo speakers. It really works great!

It has a bluetooth GPS that I can use to provide a GPS signal to a laptop or to my phone for navigation. A GPS antenna is mounted on my roof in front of the third brake light.

Here are a few pics:

Here is the website for the bluetooth kit:

here is the place where I bought my kit (They have ALL of the bluetooth stuff):

here is a link to the thread at www.treocentral.com (Treo 650 smartphone forums) where I document my installation into my 2004 F-150 SCREW. I even have a link there back to here!!!!!
If you read the thread, I initially had some problems, but that was on my smartphone end, not the carkit, and it was fixed with firmware releases and updates.

Here is that link to that thread:

I would definately recommend the parrot ck-3100 or ck-3300

Good luck!

you need to buy a reverse harness and a regular harness for your radio, then it is as simple as plug and play!!! It cost me $200 for the kit, but mine does not have the color screen, the motorola sucks because you do not have access to your phone book or a display, plus the parrot has voice commands and shows batter and signal strength, as KC8FLB said it is better than sliced bread I highly recommend it, you will wonder how you ever lived without it!! If you have any questions let me know.

Yeah I like the one with the color screen. I don't discount that the two parrots appear to have better features then the motorola. Actually though since the phone is also motorola, the motorolla system will have all the features of my phone. (In terms of phonebook)

My big thing is that I want the setup to look very OEM and not stand out. I just don't want it mounted on top of the dash or attached by the radio.

The two parrot versions are a little big and wouldn't be able to easyily be integrated into the dash. With the motorola system the chrome will match my lariat and I could custom fit it, into the ash tray, so it will be hidden. Or I can put it between the reverse sensing button and the cigarette lighter.

GPS navigation isn't a big feature for me because I plan on getting the Eclipse 5495 for navigation in January.

I still have a lot of reading and lookups to do. I'll read your thread because I'm assuming either way I go, the wire hookups will be the same or similar. Because as of right now I have no clue what wires to attach where.

Any thoughts on the installing in the ash tray idea? I just want to hide all my wires and make this look like a very built in feature.

Thanks again,

Duke
